Global temperatures in October smashed the prior monthly record by 0.4C, and were ~1.7C above preindustrial levels.

It wasn't quite as gobsmacking as September, but still comes in as the second most anomalous month in what has been an exceptionally hot year already.

Holy crap ... you've got to read this.

"we call for an IPCC special report that focuses on the perilous climate feedback loops, tipping points, and—just as a precaution—the possible but less likely scenario of runaway or apocalyptic climate change."

State of the climate: Global temperatures throughout mid-2023 shatter records - Carbon Brief The first three quarters of 2023 has seen exceptional heat globally, putting 2023 on track to be the warmest year since records began in the mid-1800s.

For details on the anomalous temperatures the world has experienced over the past few months, as well as updated indicators of climate change across the surface, oceans, and cryosphere, check out my new Q3 State of the Climate update over at @carbonbrief.org: www.carbonbrief.org/state-of-the...

Just asking for clarification, you focused on October-December because AA has the largest impact on Arctic sea ice in that time of year?

Line graph time series of global mean surface temperature anomalies for each Southern Hemisphere September from 1880 through 2023. There is a long-term increasing trend and large year-to-year variability. A 30-year lowess smoothing line is also shown with a red line. The global mean surface temperature anomaly in September 2023 was 1.29°C for the Southern Hemisphere. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1951-1980 climate baseline.

2023 anomaly is largely driven by Antarctic sea ice losses whereas in 2016 I think sea ice losses at both polar regions were not within 2 standard deviations.

Line graph time series of 2023's daily global sea ice extent anomalies in red shading compared to each year from 1979 to 2022 using shades of purple to white for each line. The year 2016 is also highlighted in yellow, which is the current absolute magnitude record low. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline. There is substantial interannual and daily variability. Data from the NSIDC.

The size of the global sea ice departure (i.e., amount of missing ice compared to 1981-2010) has just reached the largest anomaly in our satellite record... 🥴

Now averaging across the entire Antarctic last month shows a record high for the month of September...
