OpenAI's new "AGI" criterion is actually quite simply and easy to understand:

"Which Goal Post Position Will Make Everyone Give Us Money With Zero Oversight Or Responsibilities?"

That's it. That's all it's ever been & the only way they've ever done it, even if they refuse to admit it to themselves

All of this is preparing us for the new narrative device: Chekhov's Sandwich.

If it's on the table in act 1, it must be lobbed by act 3.

I love my job! This time around, Olga and Oleks are giving us tools and ideas to deal with the constant turmoil of this current era: your permacrisis playbook.

Coaching their talks has been a delight.

You should come check it out!

I think we should establish an understanding in the United States that if you order the military to carry out a lethal strike against something that is not an imminent threat without congressional authorization, what you did was murder and the entire chain of command is guilty.

Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job.
AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations:

A 12-foot statue of Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein frolicking and holding hands appeared on the National Mall in Washington, DC on Tuesday, September 23.

A plaque under the statue states that it has been erected β€œIn Honor of Friendship Month."

AI β€˜Workslop’ Is Killing Productivity and Making Workers Miserable AI slop is taking over workplaces. Workers said that they thought of their colleagues who filed low-quality AI work as "less creative, capable, and reliable than they did before receiving the output."

A new study, based on a survey of 1,150 workers suggests that the injection of AI tools into the workplace has not resulted in a magic productivity boom and instead increased the amount of time that workers say they spend fixing low-quality AI-generated β€œwork.”

In addition to scraping your uploads for "generative AI" training, Academia dot edu is going to start claiming rights to your personal infoβ€” *including your signature & voice*β€” for anything they see fit.

So now'd be a good time to remove all of your uploaded works, & then delete your whole account.

A while back I got the chance to talk with @jasonmehmel.bsky.social about the intersections of "generative AI," magic, esoteric, and culture, and many of the dangers and possibilities in their components and conjunctions. Always be aware of what you bring into the Workβ€” and what the tools bring, too

It's been a while.

Glad to be announcing a new game, and happy that it is something experimental and weird: a tiny, tense, turn-based strategy game about merging units into spectacular combinations, and then watching them evaporate thousands of bugs.

Thank you for this memory, and for the writing craft reminder that when an author feels the ache of their story, the reader is likely to as well.

A supporting note to this: a lot of people think that they can *write* fiction because they can *read* fiction.

Or that they can *act* by replication of an emotion because they *have* emotions.

Those skills are opaque but distinct from what the expression of them feels (or 'vibes') like.

I've been trying to understand the passionate fans of the Wheel of Time books while finding the texts very much not to my taste, and exploring that has been fruitful as a reader *and* a writer.

Agreed. Rather than trying to provocatively critique something popular, they should try discussing the space between the clear engagement the text enjoys and their own disconnection from it. That at least would be interesting.
