Help pregnant cows on MV Spiridon II ship enroute to Uruguay and end live export On September 19th the MV Spiridon II Ship carrying 2,901 cows left Uruguay for Turkey 12,000 km away—one of the longest routes for live export. Many of the cows were pregnant. After travelling an arduous 33 days at sea the cows arrived on October 22 • Floating graveyard: The animals were left stranded at Bandirma Turkish port in Turkey for over two weeks in deteriorating conditions without sufficient food or water and veterinary care. Türkiye refused to allow the animals to disembark due to inconsistencies in identification records. 2,893 live animals remained confined on board. 140 cows gave birth. Fifty-eight cows and ninety calves have been reported dead. Dead animals are reportedly kept in plastic bags onboard, posing an environmental and public health threat • Pregnant cows and calves suffering in deteriorating conditions: Many pregnant cows have given birth in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions. Extended sea voyages cause severe stress to animals, including exhaustion, dehydration, heat stress, injuries, and compromised immune systems. Supplies of feed, bedding, and fresh water are believed to be critically low or fully depleted. Reverse osmosis water systems on such ships are frequently unreliable near shorelines, further endangering the animals and exposing them to starvation and dehydration. After Türkiye denied entry, the MV Spiridon II is now returning with exhausted, dehydrated, and sick animals. These animals have been at sea for over two months, traveling from Uruguay to Türkiye and now back toward Uruguay—a nightmarish journey of more than 24,000 km. This ship which has become a floating graveyard is one of the longest and most grueling live exports in the world. Address ongoing emergency We, the undersigned individuals and organizations, urgently call upon the Government of Uruguay and the relevant authorities to take swift and compassionate action to rescue the animals currently trapped on the farmed animals vessel MV Spiridon II. The ship is sailing back toward Uruguay and is expected to arrive on 14 December 2025. We respectfully ask the Uruguayan government to: • Fiinalize customs procedures without further delay and immediately provide veterinary assessments and medical treatment to safeguard animal welfare and prevent additional deaths. • Ensure deceased animals are disposed of safely and in accordance with environmental and public health regulations. • Request an independent veterinary inspection by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. • Prohibit sick animals from being re-shipped or sent to slaughter and instead ensure they are placed in farm animal sanctuaries. • Conduct a full audit of the journey and demand complete transparency. • Activate emergency protocols established for crises of this nature. Ban Live Export of farmed animals This crisis aboard MV Spiridon II underscores the systemic cruelty, suffering, and environmental harm inherent in the global live animal trade. The distress and fatalities observed here are not isolated incidents but symptoms of a deeper structural problem incompatible with both animal welfare and climate objectives. Hayvanlar iki aydan uzun süredir denizdedir; Uruguay’dan Türkiye’ye gidip tekrar Uruguay’a dönerek 24.000 km’den fazla, kâbusa dönüşmüş bir yolculuğu yaşamaktadırlar.
