I had a white prof in grad school who mispronounced his name throughout a lecture in 3 different ways until she finally said β€œAurangzabub was a known religious extremist.”This problematic stereotype has been around for a long time, even academia. But now there’s real propaganda and consequences

"What can academic leaders do to restore declining faith in their institutions?" How about oh, I dunno, not endorsing the very technologies that are helping to destroy them and deskill their workers

AI's Climate Impact Goes beyond Its Emissions To understand how AI is contributing to climate change, look at the way it’s being used

AI, such as chat gpt and others, causes so much emission and more. Each inane use of ChatGPT contributes. Please refrain

Only if their destructive practices hurts their bottom line. Then greenwashing….the tech hurts art, music, creative thinking of all kinds etc. AI ubiquitousness is inevitable but the environmental stand against it might be the last major argument against all its various harms.

Yeah not directly, but the more consumer-end appetite there is for it, more corporations will expend energy to generate more appealing AIs. Of course, the corporate and governmental use of the dirty grid is the problem, but the consumer-level use normalizes it and there is less pushback from ppl

The more we interact with AI, including for amusement, the worse we make climate change. Resist!

If you don’t know what this case is:

Woman gets restraining order against violent ex.

He violates it. She calls cops. They don’t come by.

Repeat several times.

Eventually, he murders her and daughters.

Family sues cops, said had obligation to respond and failed.

SCOTUS? β€œNah, no obligation.”

Success in Indiana: religious right to abortion left in place

Small victory in abortion legal battles. Thanks to all that worked on this brief. I’m still gathering narratives (anonymous of course) of Muslim abortion experiences in case anyone wants to reach out. The data is already proving helpful in legal battles. mailchi.mp/law.columbia...

Yeah I think it still would work if you had a chapter 2 that was a theory one, especially if it had your special sauce argument on it. Can’t wait to read this new thing when you’re done!

I’m a big fan of using ch1 as β€œbackdoor intro” for discussing theory+relevant history/historiography so the intro is pithy+about what the whole book’s contribution is. If you have a strong argument regarding the backdoor intro material that’s a reason to do one. Or else slash theoretical stuff?
