it is very funny that Cuomo tweeted out a half-baked inanity phrased as a policy proposal but obviously intended purely as an attack on Mamdani, and is now stuck supporting a disastrous housing policy that his team needed to reverse engineer to comport with his original tweet.

i guess that's why they've settled on only adding the surcharge to mobile purchases from customers who repeatedly buy their tickets just before the conductor arrives (after an escalating series of warnings).

the $2 is an increase on the existing $6~ surcharge for anyone purchasing a paper ticket onboard. i am not saying that's a great policy, but it seems like applying that penalty to mobile purchases at least brings some parity to the situation.

if EZPass RFID readers occasionally malfunctioned and gave some drivers free runs through a bridge toll, i wouldn't consider updating those readers to properly catch all the drivers "nickel and diming."

i agree that it was nice to sometimes sneak in a gratis ride because the conductor wasn't able to punch my ticket, but i am not sure that "effectively collecting the tickets they sold us" counts as the MTA "nickel and diming."

it's a mobile ticket purchased in-app, what is lost when the advanced purchasing timeline is shortened? why would someone purchase a train ticket on their phone weeks before their planned journey?

i don't understand, this seems like a fairly straightforward way to ensure that everyone who buys a ticket for a journey uses that ticket for the journey. am i misunderstanding some enforcement angle?
