I'm doubly old still at the moment, because I STILL can't get over prices down here after Scotland, PLUS how much everything costs now compared to ten years ago.

There are places you can get them in Dundee! Although they don't look quite like that...!

Yes it's really confusing if you recognise the locations! The various houses are mashed together from all over the country, which doesn't help. Although the exterior of the Bridgerton house is in Greenwich - not Mayfair, but at least actually London!

It's set in London, where the social season in this period (and either side of it) is spring to summer. Summer in the country is mid August onwards, with hunting etc following in the autumn (still in the country, or in Scotland for people with links/estates there!). Roughly matches parliament.

Most of mine don't - there's usually one or two per class, but it is often the more mature or most game-oriented students who may be familiar. I teach games mostly to non games studies students, however, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Do I know any South Asian game writers/narrative designers looking for a full-time contract?

I hate that as a concept so much. All of the phonics terminology is such a nightmare...

I don't know what the current status is of the WCCUK small grants scheme, but you could look into that?

The Historian's Holonet Star Wars and World Wars

As promised recently, I'm delighted to now be launching a new monthly newsletter service which will become the home of monthly content from me regarding my work as a historian of both Star Wars and the First World War. But what does that mean?

It's not a nice relaxing game to start a Sunday, is it?!

Hope you're having a lovely weekend otherwise!

Oh I hadn't realised πŸ˜‚. I signed up to the app for something and then I keep getting all these Cornell bird project emails...!

There's a really good app from Cornell for bird identification and also they run various projects etc of tracking or observing stuff across the year, which might be worth a look!

It tends to vary quite a lot by institution, although in general there's been a move across the board in the UK to be a bit more formal about supervision, and to avoid students disappearing entirely for years on end, which has made more places introduce monthly or two-monthly meeting reqs.

I feel so defeated. I graduated from Cologne Game Lab this week and I've been looking for a job opportunity for around 3 months. I haven't seen a SINGLE 3D Environment Art position.

If you know ANYONE in Germany that looks for a 3D Artist please help me.

More than once recently I've had to very hastily hide the phone/switch midway through a sex scene/fight when a student has come to speak to me.

There are also good relevant chapters in Willson, Michele, and Tama Leaver. Social, Casual and Mobile Games: The Changing Gaming Landscape. New York, UNITED STATES: Bloomsbury Academic & Professional, 2016.

Yes I was going to suggest this too - I think quite a lot of good political work on casual gaming has been done with a view to gender! Cote (Gaming Sexism) has some good stuff too.

2025 was a wildly fascinating ride into gendered histories throughout the past!! Here's a selection of some of the #WCCWiki #Wikipedia pages from across the year that we created or edited, including the achievements and challenges we faced as a community ...

When I started in academia I could manage extra work all evening and every weekend - the job I was doing meant that that was all going on teaching prep rather than anywhere useful, but still. I would value having that capacity back now - I really find myself so much more tired these days.

How? How do you double-check the accuracy, if you're not already an expert? Ask a different GenAI? Or do you, you know... Have to go and do the research you would have done anyway, pre-AI? Because I'm buggered if I can think of how you do that in a way where the GenAI saved you time.

Do I know artists who work in an 18th century style of illustration who might take on a modest proposal (so to speak)?

(would love to see portfolios)

28.01.2026 17:48 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes exactly! I appreciate the chance just to find out what it's like to play, and then to decide if I do/don't like it, which is rare otherwise. And most of these things won't be on the radio so people are not getting even to make that decision or find out about them.
