For teaching purposes I really just want something clear and readable, reasonably close to the original, and not costing a fortune in case students want their own... So if there's not a good modern paperback or it's not in any of the books with a few in at once, that's really not ideal!

The Canon strikes again.

This is also true for reprints of commentaries, which is frustrating - I thought about doing one of the "political plays" of Euripides with my Greek students, but there did not seem to be a reliable supply of existing commentaries anywhere for them to be able to afford!

I'm teaching some tragedies in translation which I usually only read in Greek this year, and it's been a really interesting reminder of the wide range in available translations. Some of the "unpopular" plays are still very limited for options!

Summoned up the courage to go to a new hairdresser for the first time in about five years (such a fraught process that when I moved to Scotland I just kept seeing my hairdresser in Newcastle...) and cut all my hair off. Back to myself. Success!

Apparently today (now I'm past the start of term emails...) it's writing a lecture on the festival and 'literary' contexts of Greek drama, Hades 2, and marking. Not a bad day really.

In order to find clear space to get particular things done I've taken to planning out all my days in my calendar for the next two weeks in advance. It does mean that I get the enjoyable surprise of consulting my calendar every morning to find out what I'm doing today.

The bit where he "plays with words like other people play with video games" tips this over for me.

Like seriously...

Well to be honest they all seem very disconnected from reality so I'm not all that surprised by the postmodern disclaimer 😂
