CFP: A Time of Monsters
The monster has been here all along. It is a historical constant that manifests in wildly different ways across time, place, and culture. Whatever form it takes, the monster claws at categories; it un...
If you are a supporter and reader of @contingent-mag.bsky.social one of the biggest things you can do to help us at the moment is get this CFP to the NTT folks in your life. The fracturing of social media has made it very difficult to get the word out esp. to adjuncts and VAPs.

I don't understand how this decision can be legitimate at all - it's not a possible edge case this, surely. It's just wrong. Not great to have that at a world cup. #INDvPKN

For teaching purposes I really just want something clear and readable, reasonably close to the original, and not costing a fortune in case students want their own... So if there's not a good modern paperback or it's not in any of the books with a few in at once, that's really not ideal!

This is also true for reprints of commentaries, which is frustrating - I thought about doing one of the "political plays" of Euripides with my Greek students, but there did not seem to be a reliable supply of existing commentaries anywhere for them to be able to afford!

I'm teaching some tragedies in translation which I usually only read in Greek this year, and it's been a really interesting reminder of the wide range in available translations. Some of the "unpopular" plays are still very limited for options!

Summoned up the courage to go to a new hairdresser for the first time in about five years (such a fraught process that when I moved to Scotland I just kept seeing my hairdresser in Newcastle...) and cut all my hair off. Back to myself. Success!

Talked with my drama class a lot about ideology and Marxism, then asked my first years whether to do classics is to be complicit in imperialism. Apparently I'm in my trying-to-get-arrested-in-America era.

Right, it was a morning of Routledge editing and writing, exciting stuff as the spreadsheet gets more and more ticks in the "final" column. This afternoon I'm back to teaching prep - how does Greek drama and its 'ideological' aspects fit into a wider context of 'literary' culture and festival.
