11.11.2025 11:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0One day before firing... tomorrow is a hot day for these cups, jugs, bowls, whorls and dishes.
Most of them are replicas made after Roman, late medieval and early modern pottery.

A picture of a young man in suit, steering a car while the water is reaching up to his chin. He is looking rather unimpressed with the situation.
Around the year 2000 26% of Dutch people are living below sea level.

The picture is part of a series entitled "Normal". I made it in 2020. My good friend Kasper posed in the cold water as businessman.

four pieces of pottery: a redware pitcher, a cauldron and a bowl with green glaze on the inside and a large green cauldron.
A large group of archeological pottery and glass with many colors and different shapes. Some pieces are broken of glued together.
Some pottery I made for Caesar's Ford Theatre in the US. It's now traveling over the Atlantic Ocean. To the right you can see the 17th century pieces that were used for reference.

I very much need to go there, even if it's just to say hello to the jug that I based this one on, and also to a stag shaped aquamanile. I love creature shaped pottery ๐

The Louvre is a kind of majolica heaven! I visited the museum on Friday and saw this extraordinary pitcher. Dating: 1480. Made in Faenza, Italy.

I usually don't do cartoons but this guy makes me so angry. Wilders is a nonsense populist with dangerous xenophobic ideas. Today he took a dump on the Netherlands by dropping out of the Cabinet, blaming others while he was at the steering wheel.

Some people think air pockets in pottery are dangerous, but it's really moist๐ง. Water expands about 1700 times when it turns into steam... you can move a train with that! So, drying your pottery is important. And: firing GENTLY.

A selfie with a happy looking straw hat dude in the woods. Behind him there's a true wonder of medieval technology: a potter's wheel that consists of a platform with a kickwheel on top.
Same dude but on a market square, using the potter's wheel in medieval attire while some people are watching
A medieval image of a female potter working with bare feet on an elegant pot in front of her on the kickwheel. There's a pile of clay in the foreground, some jugs on a shelf in the background, a red shield with a white lion to the left and the name "hefneryn" written above her head
I just replaced the platform of my potter's wheel. The source: a playing card from 1455. 2nd image: my last event at #utrecht (Hanne Hansen Photography).

Fascinating! I do wonder if Bellini would've liked his creative process to be exposed like this... I suppose he had his reasons to finish the painting the way he did.
13.05.2025 14:59 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0So you would expect that even this special Bartmann jug was made in a series. But I haven't seen another one! Until I made this replica. Now there's a chance for me to continue the Bartmann tradition with series of this dude... and other Bartmann jugs of course!
13.05.2025 10:59 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A collection of white moulds in which you recognize the details of the aforementioned Bartmann jug with hands, curls and smock shirt
Although... they were made with moulds! Not one huge mould to cast the whole thing but smaller ones for different details. The jugs themselves where first thrown on the potter's wheel and then decorated with thin sheets of clay that were pressed in those moulds.

Now back to the full body Bartmann jug that I started with. The one with the pewter lid is the original that was probably made between 1525-1550 in Cologne. It's now in the Victoria and Albert museum. Bartmann jugs came in many varieties but this one, with a body and hands, is quite unique.
13.05.2025 10:51 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Another bulbous brown glazed jug with narrow neck and narrow foot. The face on the neck is crude and angry. There's a rosette on the belly of the jug.
Here's a typical 17th century Bartmann (replica again). It's angry and it has every reason: in the 17th century, the Bartmann jug is more and more considered a storage jar instead of a prestigious jug to put on the table.
13.05.2025 10:45 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This jug features a text: drink and eat, but don't forget about god. Very pious indeed! But what does the face represent? Some faces have animal ears, some look angry, some are female, some have a trinity-face. You could write a book about the symbolism (and someone did) but there's no easy answer.
13.05.2025 10:41 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A brown glazed jug with bulbous belly and a wide smile in his enormous beard.
The Bartmann jug (from German "Bartmann" - bearded man) was especially popular in the 16th century. They came in many varieties, some with only a bearded face, some entirely covered in ornaments and texts. This very happy Bartman would have been common around 1600 (only this is a replica again).
13.05.2025 10:34 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Two brown glazed jugs besides each other. They look very similar but the right one has a pewter lid. The jugs have a chunky body that actually looks like a body of a man wearing 16th century attire with a little cape and a smock shirt appearing from under his slashed upper garment. He's got arms closely pressed against his body and he's holding a glass and a jug. He's got a small face with a full beard, mustache and curls.
Which Bartmann jug is 500 years old, left or right? This dude is a true masterpiece of 16th century stoneware and I've just finished my first replica.

The feet are shaped to make sturdy stacks of jugs in the kiln: the foot of the higher jug should fit over the neck of the one below. The feet also protected the contact surface between jugs against salt glaze: this made separating the jugs after firing easier. youtu.be/Kyh3IcNZErM?...
