This morning we filed a lawsuit against Marco Rubio and Kristi Noem challenging the constitutionality of two laws they are using to deport noncitizens because of speech they don't like.

Nobody should get a midnight knock on the door for disfavored speech, let alone kicked out of the country.

That, of course, is only part of the problem. Can the person helping you with your SBA loan start preaching at you? The person helping you with your Social Security or disability claim? Sure seems like it. People shouldn't have to grin and bear it when trying to access core government functions.

Federal employees can pray and preach in the workplace under new Trump rules The White House noted that similar language was issued under President Clinton.

What a trash headline. Employees could ALWAYS pray in the workplace. This memo allows coercive proselytizing, potentially creating hostile work environments for rank-and-file staff when their supervisor starts trying to "persuade [them] of the correctness of their own religious views."

Bove's position should have been filled last year by an eminently qualified normal candidate, who happened to be Muslim. The gap between Mangi and Bove is the gap between what American thinks it is and what it actually does.

Doing what Christian Nationalists do best: turning religious freedom on its head and inside out.

Bingo. It's not about "following the rules." It's white supremacy, pure and simple.

There are orders of magnitude more trans people than Republican legislators but this sort of shit seems to happen an awful lot more among the latter than the former. Weird.

Why'd all you suckers spend so much money going to law schools when you could have just asked Grok, Catturd, and Mechahitler420 PLLC for legal advice?? Checkmate, wokeists.

This is not the act of a legitimate government.

Mostly agree. And the updates added after I read the piece, I think, clarify their response quite a bit. The "you're outsiders & we don't know you" thing still strikes me as odd. Goes back to the assumption of bad faith (that was reinforced with the legal-adjacent language in the email).

It's not that St. John's Pride turned away @recoveringfromreligion.org as a national org. It's that they explicitly told *the local volunteers and RFR members in their community* that they're not welcome. That they have to leave that part of their identity at the door. And why? They won't say.

15.07.2025 18:02 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's never the case that we say come in from afar and say "We, American Atheists, want to exhibit here." It's our local folks who know how transformative finding an atheist community can be who want to get out there and meet *other LGBTQ people* who share their values! And we help them do that.

15.07.2025 18:02 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

There's this assumption of bad faith that seems pervasive. That atheists MUST want to come to Pride to... cause trouble? Engage in Debate-Me-Broβ„’ with the inclusive Catholics or something? Absolutely not.

15.07.2025 18:02 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Here at @atheists.org, we often pay the tabling costs and registration fees for our affiliates and groups to attend their local Pride. Why? Because like a third of our members are LGBTQ! Because we believe that LGBTQ people deserve safe and affirming communities that match their values!

15.07.2025 18:02 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Asking for a response within a couple of business days after radio silence for a month isn't being rude! Folks have to make arrangements to send tabling materials (and people!) to these events! "We'd like a response so we can make appropriate plans" doesn't exactly feel like a big ask, y'all!

15.07.2025 17:51 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The response from organizers, claiming that RFR's "tone" (that is, asking for a response to understand why the were being kicked out) only "reinforced some of [their] initial concerns about your organization’s tactics and approach to engagement" is... not great. "We KNEW you atheists were trouble!"

LGBTQ-affirming atheist group denied booth at St. John’s Pride Festival Organizers cited vague concerns, despite Recovering from Religion's global support for queer communities

Such a bizarre and short-sighted decision. @recoveringfromreligion.org does incredibly valuable work for folks working to heal from very real trauma. It's baffling why St. John's Pride would go out of its way to stigmatize the 50%+ of LGBTQ+ people who are nonreligious. (via @friendlyatheist.com)

The Supreme Court should preserve the status quo until legal questions are resolved and explain the disposition of cases for the public. They are abdicating basic principles of equity and failing to fulfill their institutional role. They aren’t pretending to try. There isn’t even the veneer of law.

simplest explanation is that the court conservatives believe trump is sovereign and thus free of all limits on his authority

The prospect of travel excited this applicant. And in fact over and over the DHS agents at the fair emphasized how it was the best part of their job.

A longtime ICE agent said he had accompanied undocumented immigrants on deportation flights to more than fifty countries and stayed in numerous three- and four-star hotels. A White House rooftop sniper said that she had had β€œamazing experiences in foreign countries” and that the camaraderie of her sniper team reminded her of her college volleyball team.

My head is going to explode. ICE is recruiting by pitching travel as one of the key perks of the job.

Like, travel *accompanying deportation flights.* Literally.
