The Erie Canal was built 1817-21, Chicago was incorporated in 1837. The only thing the two have in common is that the canal *accelerated* settlement of the Great Lakes region, and was definitely not built to "compete with Chicago." Cuomo is either stupid or lying, which could it be?

I have thought this very thing.
Americans have been insulated by competent governance and strong institutions. At some point they were convinced that those governments and those institutions were oppressing them and not protecting them.

And so, here we are.

Multiple times this year I’ve had coffee with fellow immigrants who grew up in corrupt third world countries and the shared sentiment has been that Americans don’t understand how bad things are going to get.

I want to go running, but…

I sprang back out at 18, just twelve years later.

That was certainly a film that pushed me deeper into the closet.
