"I certainly empathize with Americans who are exhausted after 25 years of foreign entanglements in the Middle East," said Mr.
Vance, who has been a vocal skeptic of those engagements. "I understand the concern, but the difference is that back then, we had dumb presidents, and now we have a president who actually knows how to accomplish America's national security objective."

This is the testament to the effectiveness of protesters and Palestinian journalists. By exposing what Americans would otherwise not see, they are shifting public opinion. It's much tougher to shift policy but it's clear they are moving things and should stay at it.

Political Parties Are Illegal in the United States – J. W. Mason

Great clarity on the left ballot question in the US here. Everyone left of the Democratic consensus has struggled with how to approach electoral success and this essay from Michael Kinnucan of the NYC DSA really lays it out starkly:

Library lovers & comrades,

Take action now to tell Vancouver Public Library to reverse its anti-Palestinian branch-wide ban on staff wearing watermelon pins and keffiyehs.

VPL's ban is assault on its stated commitments to intellectual freedom & decolonization.

In light of State Farm's request that CA allow "emergency" insurance premium rate increases, citing claims for the LA fires, I'll re-up this blog for @lpeblog.bsky.social which looks at how the industry obscures how its finances work in an effort to keep profits high.

“What keeps us going, ultimately, is our love for each other, and our refusal to bow our heads, to accept the verdict, however all-powerful it seems. It’s what ordinary people have to do. You have to love each other. You have to defend each other. You have to fight.”

Counting, This New Year’s Morning, What Powers Yet Remain To Me
by Jane Hirshfield

The world asks, as it asks daily:
And what can you make, can you do, to change my deep-broken, fractured?

I count, this first day of another year, what remains.
I have a mountain, a kitchen, two hands.

Can admire with two eyes the mountain,
actual, recalcitrant, shuffling its pebbles, sheltering foxes and beetles.

Can make black-eyed peas and collards.
Can make, from last year’s late-ripening persimmons, a pudding.

Can climb a stepladder, change the bulb in a track light.

For four years, I woke each day first to the mountain,
then to the question.

The feet of the new sufferings followed the feet of the old,
and still they surprised.

I brought salt, brought oil, to the question. Brought sweet tea,
brought postcards and stamps. For four years, each day, something.

Stone did not become apple. War did not become peace.
Yet joy still stays joy. Sequins stay sequins. Words still bespangle, bewilder.

Today, I woke without answer.

The day answers, unpockets a thought from a friend

don’t despair of this falling world, not yet

didn’t it give you the asking

This is why centrist bullshit negotiate with the rich politics won’t work. People want radical solutions because they’re living under a mountain of debt with no end in sight and liberals keep telling them things are getting better. I’d be worried for my safety if I was a CEO. But I’m not.
