You can pretty clearly see the structure was intended to be 3 episodes setting up Rooks Rest, the big event, then the aftermath. After that it should have been a repeat of 3 episodes of setup-big event episode-aftermath. But we ended up with only the setup episodes.

Episode 9 was meant to be a big battle (that will now be episode 1 of season 3) and then episode 10 would have been the aftermath+setting up season 3. Basically how GoT structured most of their seasons, with the big event in ep. 9.

Tbf, HOTD would have been largely fine if they hadn't been forced to cut 2 episodes right as they started filming.
