I've got several stories about the Abá/Guaraní running through my book. And it was fascinating to learn more about the Jesuit missions in Paraguay as well.

The Nature of Fashion spans many countries, and one of the threads weaving through the centuries is about the Guaraní in Paraguay and their use of achiote or annatto. They believe its bushes will lead them to the Land Without Evil.

How are you spending your Saturday evening? I'm learning to pronounce Chinese words, moving on to Danish, Guaraní, Irish, Maori... Because when you write a book, no one tells you that one day - if you are fortunate enough to be published - you might have to voice the audiobook! #writingcommunity

That is so true! My history teacher told me I would never get my History O level. I sometimes wonder if I did a degree and Masters in history and have now written essentially a history book about textiles, The Nature of Fashion, just to prove him wrong!

Regenerative systems, radical transformation, I truly believe we can get there, but it will require a new mindset. A new way of working that values multiple perspectives. A new narrative in which fashion will not be the root of the problem - will help to grow the solution. #RanaPlaza

Radical is about going deep, to the root of the matter, as well as spreading out through living systems, interweaving, becoming part of an interconnected web. I also see it as learning from historic roots to help shape our shared future.

In January 2024, Vogue Business asked 'Can 2024 deliver radical change for the fashion industry?' stating that sustainability efforts have for too long focused on incremental change at the expense of systemic transformation. They probably asked the same question this year.

12 years ago today, over 1100 people were killed in the Rana Plaza factory collapse – a tragedy rooted in an exploitative system.

Some progress has been made, but too much of it is cosmetic. Decorative topiary. When what's needed is radical change – from the root.
