Tasmania in crisis over billion-dollar AFL stadium
The Tasmanian Liberal government is in crisis and a snap election likely to be called as the premier clings to plans for a stadium that will bankrupt the state.
I'd love to see Tasmania in the AFL. But there's a lot of footy people blithely dismissing the considerable objections to the insistence on a new stadium as part of the deal without bothering to understand them. They should definitely read this piece.

Photograph of a warehouse in Kinshasa where unboxed tuberculosis medications are going undistributed due to the stop work order by the Trump Administration.
Just received this photo from a friend of a warehouse in Kinshasa. These are tuberculosis medications--ALREADY PAID FOR--that aren't being distributed due to the Trump Administration's stop work order.
TB treatment is being interrupted in SO many patients around the world. What does that mean? (1/2)

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines.
The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds.
It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

Thereβs a reason why experts have found that Duttonβs nuclear scheme will push up household power bills by up to $1200
Itβs because - as the CSIRO has found - nuclear takes too long to build, costs too much and pushes up bills

This puts it well & itβs a point I keep making about why using AI to write is so flattening. Writing is the process of working out & refining what you think. If I write an article, Iβm not just generating 1000 plausible words. Iβm trying to articulate ideas with precision, & challenging myself.

Apparently, Lib MP Joe McCrackenβs confession on some obscure libertarian podcast about the Vic Liberals' plan for sweeping cuts hasnβt gone down well internally in the party.
That was meant to be a secret.
I guess Kennett didn't campaign on closing down 350 schools, yet....

The hard truth about the consequences of the #ClimateCrisis β wildfires, floods, storms, droughts, heat waves and more β wonβt come from climate activists who are too easily ignored or even vilified. It will come from central banks. And insurance companies. And every rational evidence-based sector.

Line chart showing cumulative coal generation between 2025 and 2051 under different scenarios for the NEM.
AEMO's step change scenario, which roughly accords with the ALP's current policies, stops burning coal in 2037, at which time 573 TWh of coal fired electricity has been produced.
AEMO's least-ambitious scenario - progressive change - has almost but not quite stopped burning coal in 2050. At this time 868 TWh has been burned.
Frontier Economics' effort to model the LNP policies stops burning coal in 2048, by which time 1,594 TWh of coal fired electricity has been produced. This is almost three times as much as would be burned under the ALP's policies.
Much, much more coal is burned under the LNP plan than the ALP plan. The LNP plan also burns much, much more coal than the least ambitious AEMO scenario (which it is notionally based on).
