I don’t think an anime opening has ever made me laugh so hard.

The fun part is they all have their own tricks! Kitanohara did something similar with objects rather than characters. Ota turned digital effects like sparkles, shading, reflections, etc into clearly drawn effects... then it all contrasts with the physical backdrop. "Handmade" from a different angle!

The ways CITY's creative width becomes specific technical choices is also fascinating. Given how stylized everything is, each director basically adapts to the "level of technology" of the series. Ishidate started by translating photography ideas like being out of focus into the drawings themselves

One of CITY's greatest achievements is pushing veteran artists to tackle new challenges. Joji Unoguchi started as an in-betweener in the 80s, became a leader of KyoAni's budding BG art crew, then spent decades as art & 3DBG director

The main protagonists of Azumanga Daioh, all japanese schoolgirls, having a chilean-style barbecue themed around Chile's september 18th national holiday. All six of them -Chiyo, Osaka, Sakaki, Yomi, Tomo, Kagura- are dressed like cueca dancers or like peasants and landworkers from the country's central region, and are eating chilean dishes like empanadas, anticuchos and choripanes.

I'm on a trip outside my home country, and since it was very recently Chile's national holiday, i thought of giving it a farewell by giving the girls from Azumanga Daioh a good ol' chilean "asado." I love these characters and i thought of no better way to honor them.

A friend asking if I could draw Porky and Daffy as Pokemon (Tepig and Ducklett!) spawned into a fantastic conversation that I immediately had to immortalize

i can't spoil CITY episode 5's best trick, but suffice to say minoru ota (director and storyboarder) is a genius and this is truly revolutionary tv anime

i've long been kinda on the fence about kyoani's arawi adaptations--i've found their love for naturalism kinda at odds with arawi's surrealism and hilariously UN-natural pacing and emphasis, and both kinda cancelling each other out in the process--but not anymore!

Her fondness for Nightow and now the willingness to direct a Corocoro adaptation paint a clear picture of Rie Matsumoto's taste for juvenile chaos. If her more idiosyncratic pitches are fated to die, getting her back on something she enjoys is a pretty good deal!

the trick of course is that it's quickly established as inconceivable that the tiny, gentle, and/or adorably ineffectual characters in this show could ever do any harm to each other, in spite of their most diligent efforts

the anime "risky/safety" (1999-2000) displays a working prototype of the kyoani ideal of therapeutic moe, despite it opening on a scene of a shinigami appearing before a despondent young lady and declaring her intent to send the latter to hell.
