The parkwide fire danger level for Yellowstone National Park is VERY HIGH. Stage 1 fire restrictions will go into effect beginning Tuesday, August 12. Under Stage 1 fire restrictions, charcoal and all campfires are prohibited in the backcountry, including those in established fire rings. Portable gas stoves and lanterns are allowed only in areas that are barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within a 3-foot radius. Smoking is permitted only in areas adjacent to the provided fire ring in designated campsites or within a 3-foot-diameter area cleared of all flammable material. Smokers must ensure that all cigarette butts are properly extinguished.

Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in place for Yellowstone!

No campfires are allowed in the backcountry. Portable stoves are OK. Keep a 3 ft radius clear of debris near any stoves.

Two-tailed Swallowtail is identified by the two tails at the distal edge of the rear wing. Immediately bordering the tails are two orangish half moon shapes. Beyond this area are five small blue chevron shaped markings. And like other similar swallowtails it is mostly yellow with: a) four narrow diagonal black bars across the forewings b) a wide black bar embedded with multiple small yellow half moon shapes paralleling the trailing edge of the forewing.

Two-tailed Swallowtail is the second largest #butterfly in North America. Approaches a five inch wingspan. Found not only in canyons and along streams of the American West, but also in urban areas with green ash trees (larval host). #butterflyweek

One of the 18 of the most endangered wolves in the world, the Red Wolf. It took me 2 years to spot a red wolf, 5 years later I've been lucky to see and photograph most of the wild population. Keep searching and never give up.

I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed by this campsite (2S1) along the Slough Creek Trail. The area has seen way more traffic over the years but it was my first hike in Yellowstone and it will always be a special place.

For reforestation, which is needed worldwide, it requires the expertise of experts, and the advice of such institutions should be sought, especially from our governments and decision-makers worldwide.🌳

Here is a link to the current fire activity in Yellowstone. Many of the park's wildfires are started by lightning. If they are not threaten property/ people they are allowed to burn naturally. The park service indicated there were 350 strikes within the last 24 hours.

I’ve always enjoyed this photo because of how small our presence is in this grand landscape. Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that you’re not the biggest fish.

As the summer progresses and more of Yellowstone becomes accessible, I always get excited for these longer trips. This spot is located just beyond the park’s SE border. It’s remote, peaceful and incredibly scenic.

Beargrass can grow to up five feet in height. The evergreen wiry leaves may grow several years before a flowering stem appears. Basal leaves measure one to two feet long (Schiemann 2005). The oblong inflorescence (up to sixteen inches long!!) is a dense mass of small whitish flowers on one inch pedicels (Lesica 2017). Mass flowering events will take away your breath.

Beargrass is a #wildflower, member of the Lily family and not a grass. Known for periodic mass flowerings as pictured. Not only are the flowering raceme impressive but so are the large tussocks of wiry leaves. Now in flower in montane elevations of the Pacific Northwest.
