Iโ€™m sure thereโ€™s folks who are like, โ€œItโ€™s an author event, whatโ€™s the big deal?โ€ But I was a teenager when my town got a bookstore (Waldenbooks.) We werenโ€™t a place that saw authors. So to actually get to MEET THE PERSON who MADE a book I lovedโ€ฆfor me, that is Scholastic Book Fair levels of cool ๐Ÿคฉ

Mia Sosa and Olivia Dade seated together interview-style in front of a wall of books at East City Bookshop. Mia is Latina with short curly hair, dark glasses, bright cheerful spring green/yellow slacks, and a breezy white blouse. Olivia is a fat white woman with straight, dark hair pulled back with cute barrettes, and a long white linen dress beautifully embroidered in pink, red, and yellow.

This event with Olivia Dade to talk about ZomRomCom was so much fun, I laughed myself hoarse ๐Ÿคฃ But Iโ€™m glad I thought ahead and brought When Javi Dumped Mari with me too, for Mia Sosa to sign! ๐Ÿคฉ

A lot could be different if it didnโ€™t take me until my 30s to even encounter non-binary. Yay small rural towns pre-Internet ๐Ÿ™ƒ

The other option is to swing all the way the other directions into a tiny super crunchy granola organic wellness store, the kind catering to tradwives and folks willing to pay a weekโ€™s salary for gluten free sourdough and bulk herbs and grains. The kind of place TJs and Whole F$$ds is imitating. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Asian or Indian grocery, if thereโ€™s one where you live? They might have them for tea purposes.

DMV book friends, this is going on tonight at East City Books! And itโ€™s free! You do need a ticket though, and theyโ€™re available via EventBrite for the next three hours. See you there ๐Ÿฅฐ

(Non-DMV book friends; itโ€™s a hybrid event so you can join via zoom!)

Criticizing the language itself is not criticizing the driver. Censorship and the language invented to subvert it are two different things.

04.08.2025 18:34 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This.

04.08.2025 18:09 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Censorship and other systemic social pressures have always been a big driver of language shift.

Corporations didnโ€™t want people to talk about death, so users found a new way to talk about it anyway. The word was born in censorship, but it is also born in subversion to/resistance of censorship.

04.08.2025 18:09 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 14    ๐Ÿ” 4    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 1

Itโ€™s very delicious, and really easy, especially with precut onions and bottled lime juice!

04.08.2025 17:51 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

What does organically mean in this context? Language doesnโ€™t shift on its own. Itโ€™s almost always in response to systemic pressures like censorship, capitalism, colonialism, etc.

04.08.2025 17:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It isnโ€™t โ€œjustโ€ language changing, but it *is* language changing. Censorship is and always has been a common and powerful driver of language shifts, as are many other facets of oppression.

Fresh batch of habanerno onion pickle! It goes on EVERYTHING savory ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿœ

2 cups diced or sliced red onion
2 minced habaneros (to taste)
1/2 tsp Mexican oregano
1 tsp olive oil
Enough lime juice to fill jar

Shake well every hour and let sit 2-4 hours, until onions turn bright pink. Store in fridge.

Unfortunately itโ€™s mainstreamed, the same way people in the late 90s were saying LOL out loud unironically ๐Ÿคท Language gonna language. It would have to be the right POV or dialogue character for it to work for me. I have one character whoโ€™s chronically online and unhinged, so appropriately voicey.

Booo, I found out the video is fake. Stitched together from a Vanity Fair video a few years ago where Shatner responded to impressions of him.
