I’m sure there’s folks who are like, “It’s an author event, what’s the big deal?” But I was a teenager when my town got a bookstore (Waldenbooks.) We weren’t a place that saw authors. So to actually get to MEET THE PERSON who MADE a book I loved…for me, that is Scholastic Book Fair levels of cool 🤩

Asian or Indian grocery, if there’s one where you live? They might have them for tea purposes.

Criticizing the language itself is not criticizing the driver. Censorship and the language invented to subvert it are two different things.

Censorship and other systemic social pressures have always been a big driver of language shift.

Corporations didn’t want people to talk about death, so users found a new way to talk about it anyway. The word was born in censorship, but it is also born in subversion to/resistance of censorship.

It’s very delicious, and really easy, especially with precut onions and bottled lime juice!

What does organically mean in this context? Language doesn’t shift on its own. It’s almost always in response to systemic pressures like censorship, capitalism, colonialism, etc.

It isn’t “just” language changing, but it *is* language changing. Censorship is and always has been a common and powerful driver of language shifts, as are many other facets of oppression.

Enough lime juice to fill jar
