Stacy Bradley voted for President Trump because of his border policies, and she likes that he has restored “law and order.” But she is unsettled by one aspect of his immigration agenda. Last month, the federal government bought a warehouse next to her cheerleading gym in Surprise, Ariz., which the administration plans to convert into a detention center for up to 1,500 immigrants. Ms. Bradley, the co-owner of Woodlands Elite Cheer, said she worried that a detainee could escape, or that protests could break out. The children who train at her gym are as young as 3 and could see “people in shackles” next door, she said.

Yeah, I've done my own reporting on the findings. Asking the questions is fine and even necessary in a democracy. But the context is important.

I think the issue with people not understanding the size of demographics is at play. So they interpret statements like "most Americans have 3 months of savings" as contradicting what they heard about working class people struggling or rising numbers of homeless people.

I don't know far the analogy from works of literature to medical tools and techniques holds but it seems like the kind of thing you need to grapple with before declaring that, like medicine, literature classes and extracurricular reading should ditch anything more than 50 years old.

Arguably, this isn't even true about medicine! We don't use textbooks from more than 50 years ago, but we do use medicines, treatments, etc. developed that long ago.

Also seems problematic intergenerationally. A fair amount written during students' grandparent's lifetimes would be excluded. And lots of literature parents, aunts, uncles, etc. grew up with would be excluded.

I'm not sure anyone here needs me to spell this out, but this would mean Nineteen Eighty-Four, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, The Diary of Anne Frank, the Gettysburg Address, and Shakespeare would not be taught in middle or high school.

I can't read the full text but it also seems like regrets could be about how or when respondents got hormone therapy, even if they have no regrets or dissatisfaction with the therapy itself.

It might depend on how you record audio. I could see it doing a lot better on a recorded Zoom call than a recorded regular phone call.

If I were at Ars Technica and tasked with figuring out how to prevent anything like this happening again, I'd be asking why a reporter with COVID, sleep deprivation, and a fever was finalizing a piece. That's a liability even if generative AI weren't involved.

So it’s a race: how quickly can a person’s family realize they were snatched and find a lawyer, and how quickly can that lawyer get a habeas petition of file? And is that faster than ICE can load the detainee on a plane to Texas?

It’s exhausting and terrifying. It can be life and death.

Yeah, ideally, they’d listen to a fair amount of context when double-checking or perhaps even the whole episode. That might not be practical though.

I don’t blame people for saying ‘no AI ever,’ given how they’re made and the social impacts. But those people should say that instead of trying to come up with poorly thought thro objections to this usage specifically.

The overall article is actually solid but posting these paragraphs in isolation is misleading. It’s more plausible, perhaps, but still very unlikely, as Levitz himself explains. And, as people have pointed out, there’s no “incumbent majority” in the House so it’s not clear how that would work.

"So many books, so little time" memes, merchandise, etc. might be cringe but I feel like they reflect most readers' experience of having way too long of a to-read list.

The whole article is repulsive but this passage is at the core of it. She has no interest in writing books, she wants to win some kind of competition that nobody entered
