It's 2025 and there are still people doing "male," "female," "transgender," and "nonbinary" as their "gender identity" survey options πŸ™ƒ

Not a John Green megafan or anything (although I've read and liked a plurality of his books), but have been sufficiently aware of YA books, YouTube, and tuberculosis to know more about him than the average bear.
(I don't know much about the average bear, admittedly.)

Thrice Daily trivia game from Geeks Who Drink

Now that I can no longer spoil yesterday's Thrice thrice.geekswhodrink.com, allow me to register my annoyance that I did not get three points on the John Green question because I missed the announcement that he was Episcopalian. If I missed a John Green question, it's an overly obscure question.

This sounds delightful, but alas, I only do soil science fantasy.
(Genuinely tempted to gain some actual soil science knowledge so I can write something to submit.)

Daydreaming about doing the Door County Century (or the 50-mile option! Or the 30-mile option!) next year while I can still only go 2 miles at a stretch is... well, at least it's motivational.

Ive spent so much time working with tech people doing tech things on tech deadlines. In the past few years my practice has turned to analog tools (print making, zines, drawing) in my own personal protest. 1/3

American nostalgia is dangerous, especially because this country collectively prefers (American) dreams and myth-making instead of accurately remembering our history.

Many of us are especially bad when it comes to nostalgia for our childhood and teen years, especially if we were or felt protected.

i have said this before but i think that ones view of the current political situation is fundamentally shaped by how you view the outcome of the 2024 election. was it a definitive affirmation of the MAGA worldview or a narrow, extremely contingent result?

The trouble with teaching myself to ride a bike again is that between post-COVID deconditioning and abject fear, it doesn't take much to get my heart rate into the danger zone.

It's Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) migration season in Texas. At least 90% of all southward migration passes through Texas, either along the coast, or through central Texas.

They'll overwinter in Mexico, then return.

Let's talk about the utter weirdness of generational migration.

People who don’t know or care about justice *for others* cannot comprehend the moral authority wielded by the victims of injustice. They dimly guess that this authority is rooted not in justice, but in victimhood. So they seek to usurp it thru competitive displays of indignation.

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

In the meantime, I will have to find park trails that aren't crowded with people walking their elderly dogs.

I wish I felt less goshdarn wobbly on my bike. I know from experience that that's a feeling that will come with time, probably, but in the meantime - you don't want to cycle on Milwaukee public streets unless you are, and feel, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT in control.

Finally I talked to a human.
"It shouldn't be a problem that you're in the US," they said.
It turned out - someone (possibly me, possibly not me) put in my incorrect phone number.
(I didn't notice it because multi-factor authentication only shows the last 4 digits of your phone number!)

Can't get SMS verification from my Canadian bank account. "Huh, it must be because I'm in the US," I thought, and used email verification instead.
Until they turned off email verification.
And I had to call customer service.
It took me way too long to figure out how to talk to a human.

Bluestockings Cooperative Bluestockings Cooperative: Established in 1999, Worker-Owned since 2021. Located at 116 Suffolk Street, New York, NY 10002. One of NYC's only queer, trans, sex-worker run bookstores.

Everyone, I wanted to let you know about the sad news that despite everyone's best efforts Bluestockings will close at the end of the year: www.bluestockings.com - I want to thank every single person who sent books to them through my book drive [will share more later]. A tremendous loss to NYC.
