Woke my 11 year old daughter up a few minutes early today to remind her she had pictures with the school Band, just in case she wanted some extra time to get ready. She said “Mom I look ratchet every single day of my life, I’m not about to change that for a school photo”. REAL.

Her entire life, so where is the compromise? How do I help her navigate this without shoving her into a little tiny box like I was? Any insight would be appreciated.

I’ve ever had all the way to my 30’s. I was never allowed to express feelings that I was having about anything. Little things, and especially not big things. When I entered this stage of development, my parents did everything in their power to make me more “palatable” to the general public. I was told “Not only should you not be feeling this way, but if you can’t help it then keep that to yourself.” That mindset has shaped almost every single interaction

I just had an “ah-ha” moment while talking to my oldest. She is honest. So honest that sometimes it’s startling because she will say exactly what’s on her mind at all times and I’m stuck between validating her feelings and preserving the feelings of everyone around her. It dawned on me today that.
