The 2026 Federal Budget Proposal Shutters The Institute for Museum and Library Services
The details of the 2026 federal budget proposal spell out the goal of shutting down the Institute for Museum and Library services.
We now have the details of the federal 2026 budget proposal, and it spells the end of IMLS. The request is $6,000,000 to "conduct an orderly closeout of IMLS."
Whatever happens in the 2 court cases would be moot if this passes.

Trump officials take steps toward a radically different NSF
Efforts to shrink staff, budget, and focus have alarmed members of Congress

I've seen a lot of anger and sadness about terminated grants & am so angry & sad for those colleagues. I'd like to hear more about the junior scholars who submitted proposals that will never be reviewed & who do not have data to continue publishing from. I'm done wringing my hands - what can we do?

The Latest from the Institute of Museum and Library Services
A temporary restraining order halts further dismantling of the only federal agency for libraries, but the 2026 federal budget calls for eliminating the IMLS completely.
HUGE NEWS.
The judge in the case where 21 state attorneys generals sued the Trump administration over dismantling the IMLS just issued an injunction in favor of the plaintiffs. This is good news & the judge further indicates that the plaintiffs have a STRONG case here.

Entire staff at federal agency that funds libraries and museums put on leave
The staff of the Institute of Museum and Library Services was placed on administrative leave Monday morning, following a meeting between IMLS leadership and DOGE staff.
This is terribly alarming for all kinds of memory institutions, but also support from IMLS has been so important for so many scholars. I spent much of my time as a doctoral student working on IMLS-funded research projects that made my education and training possible.
