Any time I look to see what the Labour government is up to in the UK it turns out to be things like making posters that Alfonso Cuarón put in the background of the long tracking shot that opens “Children of Men”.

The effect on her criticism of a life-long reaction against the smallness, pretentiousness and intentional muddle she associated with the Boston Irish Catholic milieu of her girlhood is greatly underrated.

This morning, I recorded a video on TikTok about why DHS’s arguments for the power to enter homes without judicial warrants in immigration cases are bunk.

Nine hours later, TikTok still says my video is “under review,” and can’t be shared.

Well, here’s a link:

The sunlight on the garden
Hardens and grows cold,
We cannot cage the minute
Within its nets of gold,
When all is told
We cannot beg for pardon.

A student of letters is so much in the habit of striding through the centuries from one pinnacle of accomplishment to the next that be forgets all the hubbub that once surged round the base; how Keats had a neighbour and his neighbour had a family—the rings widen infinitely.

It was easier for the French to abolish feudalism and the monarchy than to make the price of bread low and stable.

One small thing I hope comes out of this nightmare is at least renaming the Department of Homeland Security. “Homeland” is not a word Americans use. It sounds like a translation from Heimatsicherheitsabteilung.

Have been interested in the rising use of “neighbor” as the relation of solidarity identified by anti-ICE protests. Your neighbors may be very different from you, but they’re made familiar—made yours—by a kind of ordinary proximity.

Clooney only did ads outside the US for this reason. He made millions as the spokesperson for Nespresso everywhere besides America and, anecdotally, I have heard a French person refer to a Nespresso machine as “Clooney.” Anway, he became a French citizen last month.

Yet if I should get married and it's Connecticut and snow
and she gives birth to a child and I am sleepless, worn,
up for nights, head bowed against a quiet window,
the past behind me,
finding myself in the most common of situations
a trembling man
knowledged with responsibility not twig- smear
nor Roman coin soup -
O what would that be like!
Surely I'd give it for a nipple a rubber Tacitus
For a rattle a bag of broken Bach records
Tack Della Francesca all over its crib
Sew the Greek alphabet on its bib
And build for its playpen a roofless Parthenon -

Gregory Corso (from “Marriage”)

Foreword
'Lolita, or the Confession of a White Widowed Male,' such were the two titles under which the writer of the present note received the strange pages it preambulates. 'Humbert Humbert, their author, had died in legal captivity, of coronary thrombosis, on November 16, 1952, a few days before his trial was scheduled to start. His lawyer, my good friend and relation, Clarence Choate Clark, Esq., now of the District of Columbia bar, in asking me to edit the manuscript, based his request on a clause in his client's will which empowered my eminent cousin to use his discretion in all matters pertaining to the preparation of 'Lolita' for print. Mr. Clark's decision may have been influenced by the fact that the editor of his choice had just been awarded the Poling Prize for a modest work ('Do the Senses make Sense?') wherein certain morbid states and perversions had been discussed.
