A Conservative Push to Make Trans Kids and School Sports the Next Battleground in the Culture War (Published 2019)

I’ll never get over that conservatives flat out told the NYT that they were going to manufacture a political issue out of trans kids to drive support for Trump.

And then they turned right around and acted like it was some kind of organic response to a real issue.

We are all fighting like hell too, I got tear gassed last week, my 60 year old friend has been arrested twice, my liberal wine mom friends have been threatened with losing their kids for speaking up.

Rage can be cathartic, but it burns you out. You can’t build a future on rage.

I’m trying to read this favorably, but I’m a trans woman and parent of a trans kid who has worked to build community in Texas for years. We are all working on this shit—trying to see a future that we can live with even if it’s flawed.

That being said, the insurance mandate that got passed this term may make insurance coverage for trans care unavailable and serve as a de facto ban for many.

Our legislature is out until 2027, so likely not in Texas.

But I haven’t ruled out Paxton going after us to make news for his (Senate?) campaign, which is how the attacks on trans care for minors started in 2022.

It’s complicated. In central Texas, there’s been some growth in small town pride events. But in cities we’ve had to watch our communities slip away as those with resources flee and others go stealth or withdraw due to trauma. I hope the larger queer community will step up for these organizers.
