One thing that doing creative work teaches you is that ideas are worth nothing. Anybody can have an idea. In a writers room you have to come up with a hundred ideas a day, and most of those don’t make the page. It’s the work of making something that gives it value. The patina of humanity.

Labour are cutting benefits, funding genocide, removing the rights and freedoms of minority groups, deporting immigrants...

How is this better, exactly? This is as bad or worse than it was before.

This "well I'm not happy with Labour but it's better that the Tories/Reform" bullshit is exactly what happens when you don't actually believe in anything or have any ideology, but instead treat politics as a team sport.

We are not in the days of fan zines, community conventions and dedicated forums anymore. We are in the age where corporations have realised that nostalgia and fanservice are powerful weapons in creating uncritical, loyal and (best of all) lucrative crusaders.

I see people attributing this to all kinds of different things, like angry reviewers of the early 2010s, and nerds being obsessive weirdos. Imo both these are off the mark.

The culprit is fandoms gradually stopped being a niche community effort and started to become corporate marketing.

Writers should internalize Lao Tzu's lesson about how the emptiness at the center of a wheel is what makes it useful, and how a pot is valuable because of where the clay *isn't*. Corporate geek culture has warped us into thinking that negative spaces are flaws that need to be fixed.

Ordered this at the Junji Ito exhibition in Tokyo a year ago, and it finally arrived in the UK. It's so high quality, holy shit.

So while it can be funny to respond to an out of context 18th century letter with "historians said they were gal pals" (and it can be!), maybe spare a thought for the historians out there who are fighting the good fight for queer historiography, and buy and read their work. 11/11

To be clear, LGBTQ stigma in historical academia *is* an entrenched force, especially with traditionalists. There's a lot of reluctance to prioritise that kind of work. But there is also a huge community of queer academics who fight very hard to prove that we have a place in history. 10/11
