See my comment below. Not necessarily planned obsolescence. I believe this is a relatively new iteration in cover design to prevent child injury and the attendant legal complications. When I was a child if we didn’t eat our watch batteries we didn’t get any dessert. 🤣

Faced with this exact situation not long ago I wondered why there’s a plastic catch holding the cover plus the apparently redundant screw. IMHO the screw is there to stop children from easily accessing and ingesting the battery. You could leave the screw out if this is not an issue.
