Spoke at La antesala de Babel @ Comillas today on “The Translation of the Future: Language Engineering, LangOps & AI”.

Loved the energy in the room. I saw students shifting from scepticism to curiosity about language tech. The future of language engineers is looking bright!

Excited to speak next week at Universidad Comillas in Madrid on the (not-so-distant) future of translation, LangOps, and AI.

My goals:

- What should we do to stay ahead (or, at least, keep up the pace) of technological progress?
- How to do this with a human-centered perspective?

Localisation Guest Talks – Day 4

We closed the series with Róisín Twomey, Content Program Manager at Microsoft (Packaging Team), who showed us what gets localised—from hardware to UX—and what can vs cannot go wrong.

A great end to an inspiring series!

Last week I gave a 5h session at Universidad Complutense de Madrid on MT & AI-driven translation tools.

Goal? Show that Python isn’t the enemy — it’s a superpower.

We played with Whisper, SeamlessM4T, Groq API & stats in Colab.

Outcome? A few more language engineers in the making!

Localisation Guest Talks – Day 2

Yesterday, we welcomed Estefanía Carmona-Fernández, Localisation PM at Spotify, for a session on career paths in l10n, how to navigate the industry, from vendor to buyer roles, and gave our students a real-world perspective on global project management.

Being in Dublin—Europe’s Silicon Valley—gives our students incredible access to industry experts!

Kicking off our guest talk series, we had Mario Pluzny (Localisation Program Manager at Personio, ex-Twitter) sharing his career journey and insights into localisation & globalisation.

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Universidad de Valladolid to give a workshop on AI for research & professional tasks and an invited talk at the CITTAC series on human-centered machine translation & language engineering.

Excited to be heading to Soria (Universidad de Valladolid) next week.

I’ll be talking about human-centered, augmented machine translation — and whether it’s a utopia or actually a feasible way forward for language technologies.

Hopefully, I'll have the chance to try those famous "torreznos" 🤩

Understanding users' needs may be a smarter investment. And HCAMT and MTUX may be another smarter way forward.

What if we focused on the needs of MT users instead?

MTUX and HCAMT shift the focus from "bigger is better" to "smarter and human-centered"—a better investment for technology that truly serves all users. Let’s design for people, not just machines.

The results?

✅Higher satisfaction in interactive workflows (human-centered)
✅Users felt in control and augmented
✅But also, higher productivity

Why are we only looking at marginally improving MT quality metrics, if improving human-MT interaction can significantly improve performance results?

In a longitudinal study, 11 professional translators worked both with TPE (static MT) and IPE (adaptive, interactive MT) in the legal domain. We assessed their MTUX, quality, and productivity.

👩‍💻 The use case?

Professional post-editors. Traditional post-editing is very common in the language services industry. However, some translators have shown reluctance in their interaction with MT.

Is there any way in which translators can enjoy more the interaction and feel more empowered?

The AI/MT industry has poured billions into larger models, more data, and computational power.

Is this the best way forward? We hear now that AI has hit a wall or that data and compute will not scale forever.

✨ With HCAMT, we can have better MT for everyone, at a lower cost, and more sustainably.

🔥What if improving MT didn’t mean burning millions on compute and data?

My PhD is now published, and introduces Human-Centered, Agumented Machine Translation (HCAMT)—an approach to build MT tools that empower users.
