Paying for municipal roads via property taxes creates the giant loophole of moving outside the city, yet it causes more driving, which increases city infrastructure costs.

What's good for one business is bad for everyone else in the city.

If you’re wondering whether we still need these changes, a driver hit Rob’s ghost bike THIS MORNING

Just minutes after I did this interview, a driver crashed into the ghost bike installed along this stretch. Come on. Let's go here, @scottgillingham.bsky.social, let's do Vision Zero and stop delaying public safety.

I wonder why they haven't tried emptying them more frequently, and working with the province to make sure nobody needs to dumpster dive to eat.

1. Campaign on big issues that are directly relevant to your voters

2. Don't get distracted from point one

3. Present as a decent human with manageable baggage

4. Don't be old as fuck.

Go forth and do likewise

I'm really disappointed in Kinew's stance here, especially after making noise about predatory use of the Notwithstanding Clause. This is just populist posturing. He's got the political power to do more to protect vulnerable people, and this kind of rhetoric isn't actually helping anymore.

We have an Emma now! There's one more person on council that isn't hostile to changes that are well supported by data.

Emma Durand-Wood wins Elmwood-East Kildonan byelection | CBC News Residents in Winnipeg's Elmwood-East Kildonan ward cast ballots Saturday in a byelection for a new councillor, following the death of Jason Schreyer in April.

Heart beat hate, work beat whining, relationships beat rants, shoe leather beat lawn signs. Elmwood-East Kildonan won big last night, and so did Winnipeg.

Some big personal news: earlier today, I registered as a candidate for Winnipeg city council in the upcoming by-election in Elmwood - East Kildonan! The neighbours, fellow advocates and friends who asked me to run have already hit the ground running!

Winnipeg's bike mayor just got a gravel bike too. :) I know there's sometimes some contention between those of us who are transportation cyclists, and the rec folks, but all bikes are beautiful.

We already have single payer transportation in our road system, which incentivizes auto use that objectively makes our lives worse, and is the lion's share of our infrastructure deficit. Meanwhile transit is disincentivized.

24.06.2025 19:17 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It irks me to no end that we're burning money in admin & fare collection costs to make transit in Winnipeg a worse, and slower experience. It really feels like something that should be single payer.

24.06.2025 19:17 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

My beef with fare collection is that it's burning money in admin costs to make transit worse. We could generate a bunch of money for the city if we started tolling all the roads too, but for some reason that's seen as unreasonable.

24.06.2025 19:10 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Can WInnipeg try this please before we add a single lane for motorists anywhere. Just try free transit for three years, and see what happens. It'll still be cheaper than any extension of Chief Peguis Trail, and move more people

Many Winnipeggers took time out of their day today to express their disappointment at the lack of any safety improvements to Wellington Cr and were silenced by our gov't - how does Cllr. Orlikow get 5 mins to speak to 5 inanimate street parking spots but those who want their child to be safe don't?

Janice Lukes is a liar and a bad human being. She’s got no heart. Rob Jenner’s widow, Wendy Van Loon, was in the gallery today when Janice Lukes moved not to hear from 30 delegations duly registered to speak. Rob was killed a year ago to the day that this agenda dropped, further delaying action.

If Growth Is Expensive, You’re Doing It Wrong – Dear Winnipeg Dear Winnipeg, Did you know that currently sailing through the City's development approval process is the rezoning of a property that will enable the construction of more housing close to existing com...

Durand-Wood talks about that in this article. If higher density still requires everyone to get in a car & drive across the city to get to jobs, shopping & leisure, you're not exactly making progress on improving city finances.

And to think, 4 years ago, telling people that we'd have a P&M with pedestrian crossing & as a right construction up to 4 plexes on most (many? some?) R1 lots Winnipeggers would lose their minds.

If we can't get a majority NDP government to care about climate change, I don't have much hope about our future.

I know doomerism doesn't help anything, but Manitoba has a lot of reasons to care, but our car first mentality makes our 'progressive' party nearly indistinguishable from the PC's.
