I’ve said this before: it’s time to put secession on the table. They need to know we consider it an option.

Just saw someone call the military occupation of DC a distraction, and that’s it, the it’s a distraction people have lost it. We should wait until the bulldozer is running over your house and all chime in with β€œisn’t there something else we should be talking about”

Criterion is relaunching its Eclipse line on Blu-ray in Nov.

New sets + upgrades β€” like the out-of-print Lubitsch Musicalsβ€” will follow.

I think these are all highly logical assumptions. Also? Either grain matching or scrubbing. You can’t scan film grain to add it, the resolution would be too low, but traditional DNR would leave artifacts on a screen that huge. If AI didn’t work, it would be a massive clean-up job.

I don’t know if it was pure - it sounds like they had a sizable team from the start that just got bigger as AI failed at every step of the way.

I’d prefer them to just show the movie too, though it’s also true that at 16k+ resolution, even IMAX would look soft. Honestly, projects there would be better off doing stuff from scratch at the native resolution because β€œreimagining” material or trying to make it fit dissatisfies everyone.

So it’s like when they made a TV series out of Casablanca in the 70s

Because humans make stupid mistakes all the time, especially when the project is poorly planned from the get-go and they’re barely holding everything together with technical specifications that have never been required before

So apparently, it may turn out that The Wizard of Oz at the Las Vegas Sphere wasn’t entirely made in AI and Google threw the VFX crew under the bus by claiming it was all done by artificial intelligence.

If true, then fucking yikes.

I don't see anything wrong with a strategically stupid announcement that tacitly increases the likelihood of an accidental nuclear war. I mean, come on.

The main Coverfly didn't do anything for me. But the Coverfly X peer-review subsection - if you could get your review scores high enough to attract higher-quality peer reads - was surprisingly useful for feedback. I'm not devoid of feedback options, but still, I will miss that something awful.

I read (and reread) Annie Jacobsen's Nuclear War last year, and all going through my mind at this moment is how ridiculously easy it is for a nuclear war to start.

Omigod, you did that too? I had a portable little TV/cassette deck and I would create little "feature presentations," sometimes recording whole movies, sometimes radio songs and stand-up bits. I never did that with ANH (although I incessantly played The Story of Star Wars w/Roscoe Lee Browne).

That's where I'm at, too. Also, I think the most important thing is for an artist to be as happy with their own work as possible. And I get the pull of nostalgia and disliking changes, but the people basically calling Lucas the devil for changing the thing with his name on it is nauseating to me.

Yeah, a redundant world works best. Too much can go wrong in either direction - paper can go up in a fire, data can be hacked. I scan every photo precious to me - too many people lose those - but I also treasure having the original because it has meaning as the actual physical object.

Yeah, I worked with a non-profit doing videos for a Palestinian combine looking to break into the US olive oil market, about 2017, and it was eye-opening what the Israelis were trying to do to them even then. Settlers were targeting their orchards, specifically.

Convicted Murderer Released by Trump From Venezuelan Prison Is Free in U.S.

The America First geniuses managed to send hairdressers and soccer players into a gulag and *import* a triple murderer into the US. Nice work.

I don’t trust the racists in the Senate to do that for, say, an unjustly convicted black person. I’d rather have the mechanism to roll the dice with the compassion of one person. There are too many innocent ppl in prison.

BUT there should be some sort of external conflict of interest mechanism.

I feel like something changed for them a few years ago. I remember when they did an animated montage of the life-deadening experience of working in an Amazon warehouse to the anti-capitalist song "16 Tons" and it was, like, 100 percent sincere. It was a shock.

do you ever stare at the ceiling and think about how the worldwide scientific establishment did the impossible and created a COVID vaccine in under a year and the response of the general public has been to go on an unstoppable rampage to destroy science and scientists

This is the end result of anti-trans bigotry: more harassment of girls and women, more policing of gender roles, more gender McCarthyism.
