Fertilizing βcontinuous cornβ drives major source of farm greenhouse gases, but conservation can help
Millions of acres in four major Corn Belt states are used to grow "continuous cornβ on the same fields year after year, requiring significant use of
New @ewgofficial.bsky.social analysis released today from me and @albine14.bsky.social. We found that just under 15 million cropland acres across Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin are used for continuous corn, representing 20% of the total harvested cropland. 1/4 www.ewg.org/research/fer...

Meat is a leading emissions source β but few outlets report on it, analysis finds
Sentient Media reveals less than 4% of climate news stories mention animal agriculture as source of carbon emissions
"The findings suggest that only about a quarter of climate articles in 11 major US outlets, including the Guardian, mention food and agriculture as a cause. And of the 940 articles analyzed, only 36 β or 3.8% β mentioned animal agriculture or meat production." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

One thing I'll never understand: Farmers grow food for deer in summer and then complain about how many of them are around. Now the harvest is coming in and deer eat apples from trees, nibble on whatever corn and soybeans are left over, and perhaps instinctively, anxiously await the hunting season.

A pale yellow butterfly, wings held closed behind its back, with a large white patch on its upper wing containing a small black spot near the edge perches in profile facing left on a small flower with a whorl of many white, thin petals and a bright yellow center.
A black butterfly perches with its back to the camera on another clump of the same flowers with its wings open and facing the right. Its hind wings are thickly outlined in reddish-orange while the upper wings have a thick diagonal reddish-orange line and several white spots near the tips.
Yet another cluster of the flowers with a butterfly, wings open and back to the camera, facing left. Common buckeyes are brown with two comma-like spots on the upper wings near the body, orange patches running along a pale brown outline of the wings, and several colorful eyespots along the outer edge.
One last clump of flowers supports a butterfly perched on top, wings open showing the undersides, at a 45 degree angle facing the camera. The upper wings are a mix of white spots and a large orange patch while the hind wings are a marbled brown with small eyespots along the outer edge.
The panicled aster is a bee and butterfly magnet this time of year.

Harvesting began a week or so ago. As the soybeans and corn are gathered and the field is cleared, the land seems to breathe a sigh as it prepares to settle in for a long sleep until next spring.

A heart shape is carved into a pristine expanse of snow, creating a striking contrast against the flat surface. The wide snowy landscape enhances the simplicity of the pattern.
Truly the greatest gift I have ever received from #Nature is this heart shape in the snow. It was made by 2 pheasants! Read about it here: fineartamerica.com/featured/the... #WorldHeartDay #BeautyInNature #unexpected
