I'm not commenting on scotus today because I have to focus on one dumpster fire at a time so as not to have a heart attack in my 30s. I will just say, today is a great day to learn more about Reconstruction. I'll keep recommending Black Reconstruction as one of my favorite books on the period.

Those without honor are almost always hypocrites, but do not think that exposing their hypocrisy will thwart them. Double standards are their weapons, wielded gleefully against those who attempt to maintain honor and fair play. Do not abandon your own principles, but know when your enemy has none.

I want our young people to know that there is a path forward, that a better world is possible. I don't want them to give up, to become cynical. They deserve to be young and full of optimism. They are owed a world that supports and sustains optimism.

Every time I pop my head up from coding there's some fresh new horror. Basically cutting funding for all enrollment-based MSIs (so that leaves HBCUs and TCUs alone, for now).

They say $350 mil was allocated for this and they'll be reallocated to other programs.

I designed this lecture on the history and politics of crime data to be an educational tool for classes and political ed. It’s organized in sections that can be taught separately if needed.

And, of course, it emphasizes the early criticisms of crime data by Ida B. Wells-Barnett and W.E.B. Du Bois.

All around us are examples of people trying to do what they can, including experimenting or getting involved for the first time, to politically resist what's happening. I'm inspired.

Again, as Octavia E. Butler said, “We don’t have to wait for anything at all. What we have to do is start.”

We deserve much better.

For nearly 160 years, federal govt has been producing a statistical report on condition & progress of education. In 2002, Congress gave Ed Dept annual deadline for that report: June 1.
For first time ever, Ed Dept just failed to meet this statutory obligation.

If we stop calling these “grants” and start calling them “contracts,” it’s clearer to people why this is such an abuse of power. This wasn’t a bunch of gifts. This was a bunch of binding contracts between researchers and the US govt for specific agreed upon projects.
