English Literature Graduate Student @ NCSU focusing on comparative conflict lit. Likely lurker, though questions to the masses will occasionally flit out between reposts of 40k and pedagogy memes

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

(even though I'm extraordinarily passionate about what I'm doing now).
I've read that these existential crises are inherent in the humanities, so maybe I just need to acclimate to the temperature of the pool a bit, but I figured I'd ask for some advice. Thanks in advance, gang <3

but when put on a grander scale, it's becoming more difficult to feel like my time and effort is well spent. Given the difficulties of getting a teaching job with a PhD (long term goal), not to mention getting a job with an MA, I wonder if there is something more "productive" I could be doing...

and/or will be able to affect positive change in a timely-enough manner. I feel like it's easy to justify my concentration within the confines of the field as a whole (at the very least, I think a comparative study of conflict literature has the potential to yield interesting results)...

(though I recognize that's likely how it sounds), nor am I looking for any sort of justification (god knows I've had enough of those conversations as an English Lit grad student), but I'm running into what I imagine is a common pitfall...

Hate to stoke the politic-doomscrolling tendencies, but I'm hoping for some advice. For the folks in the academic humanities (especially my English folks), how do you rationalize the work you do given the current political climate? I sincerely don't mean that as an inflammatory question...

This is awesome. I've found that just being willing to have that conversation is huge. Sure, as you said, genAI has still been used in my undergrad and grad courses, but it seems like hearing the rationale against its use presented in a non-combative way is enough for many folks.
