Christchurch Gate is the principal entry into the cathedral close in the Buttermarket. It was built between 1504 and 1521. The original statue of Christ and the gates were destroyed by the Puritan iconclast Richard Culmer in 1643. The gates were restored in 1660. The original towers were demolished in 1803, allegedly so Alderman James Simmons could see the cathedral clock from his bank. They were rebuilt in 1937. The new statue of Christ was installed in 1990, not long after I made this drawing. In the 1920s Buttermarket became the site for a fine war memorial to the fallen of the 1914-18 war.

Three drawings of gateau and the media used to draw them. A bright, layered cake of pink, green, blue with cherries on the top; a stick drawn gateau with fancy piping coloured with light and darker pink; lastly - a book page stained pink with a black line drawn gateau.
This week I have been teaching the drawing of ridiculously tall and fancy gateaus @artistinresidence.co - mark making with sticks & ink, a loose approach, colour play.
A friend called them "Miss Haversham cakes". I'll take that!
