This is what fuels my performances. This is what I carry on stage. This inherited strength, this refusal to be erased.
Recently, at The Kingsley Plantation, the guide said the Kingsleys were "good to their slaves."
I asked: "What is good about being owned by another human being and subjected to hard labor without pay?"
He had no answer. Because there is no answer.
My DNA walked 200 miles in chains. Survived the barracoon. Endured the Middle Passage. Arrived on Sullivan's Island only to face 250 years of slavery.
My DNA survived what should have been unsurvivable.
After reading "Barracoon" a book written by Zora Neale Hurston, I realized: The most important Black history I should be celebrating... is me.
