The Senate Dems who voted to end the shutdown without extending ACA subsidies took in a third of airlines’ PAC-driven election spending last year.
NEWS: Airlines whose profits were threatened by Trump’s flight reductions funneled huge cash to the Senate Democrats who voted to help the GOP end the shutdown without preventing huge cuts to Americans’ health care.

Trump made a huge blunder on the shutdown. So why did Democrats cave anyway?
It's not entirely Chuck Schumer's fault, but the party needs new leadership.
from Nate Silver:
Schumer was so laser-focused on avoiding “blame” for the shutdown that he failed to articulate a positive case for why it was important to shut down the government for health care or other reasons. He wasn’t playing to win so much as not to lose.

Mamdani Brings Lina Khan Onto His Team After Historic Election Win
Zohran Mamdani has named his transition team—and it’s amazing.
New York City Mayor-elect Mamdani is kicking off with a big move: bringing former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan to co-chair his transition team.
It's a strong suggestion that he’s willing to take on powerful corporate interests as mayor. trib.al/99csETK

LILLEY: Ontario's ad on tariffs using Reagan was right, but it failed
Trade talks are now frozen over an ad as Trump claims Ontario's anti-tariff message is fake and fraudulent. Read Brian Lilley's column.
The Toronto Sun on the Ontario gov’t ad on Reagan’s strong views against tariffs that sent Trump into sanity arrest. They responded swiftly, most media reported, by canceling the ad—just after it will run in games 1 & 2 of the World Series, featuring a Canada team for the first time, v. the Dodgers.

…So IMO the NYT’s entire mission here is not really to offer a winning formula but instead to tone police the discourse.

Worth adding: As I’ve said before, the term “centrist” doesn’t really mean anything anymore because there is no common definition of what “the center” is. Professional editorial writers in Manhattan have a very different idea of what “the center” is than the rest of us…

The New York Times’ “Moderation Advantage” Is a Statistical Illusion
After accounting for money and incumbency the supposed electoral bonus for moderate candidates vanishes entirely.
The NYT editorial board told Democrats that they must discard populism be more “centrist” to win. Stanford’s @adambonica.bsky.social ran the data that the NYT used and shows that the entire premise is false.

Supreme Court ruling: "This Court now concludes that independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption. That speakers may have influence over or access to elected officials does not mean that those officials are corrupt. And the appearance of influence or access will not cause the electorate to lose faith in this democracy."
Every now and then I go back and read the Citizens United ruling to see if it is as unhinged as I thought, and every time I do that I see it is actually far more deranged than I remembered.
