Going back to the dropped/bungled prosecution; I sometimes wonder if some gimlet in Whitehall genuinely thinks not calling the Chinese the ‘enemy’ is going to make a blind bit of difference to their attitude.

It’s akin to Chamberlain to dealing with Hitler.

We got to be Jack of all Trades and the TG17 in the Registry definitely got to be Masters of None.

So I left the Ops Support team on promotion with a copious knowledge of niff-naff & trivia, which I still retain 20 years later…

That way the oxygen thieves in the Registry didn’t get upset, and we also got to do lots of other useful Blue Peter tasks like prepare slides, do the Morning Brief, send faxes, and operate the Battle Staff if war broke out.

We had a Registry operated by the usual mix of Admin jobsworths and know-it-alls, but the vast majority of our SECRET documents and other materiel were managed by ourselves as an Ops organisation. Which required us essentially operating our own Registry but we called it Ops Support.

So we no longer had CDNF - Classified Document Not on File - and their CDNF Register. They became PMNDF and they had a PMNDF Register.

I could have cheerfully throttled the person or persons responsible, working at the time as I did in an Ops Support role.

It also amused me back in the day when some bright spark in the MOD did away with CONFIDENTIAL as a definition, as well as the term ‘Classified’ and replaced it with the ‘term’ Protectively Marked.

I can imagine a committee was formed in the MOD to dream up that nonsense.

So the idea HMG would abandon a prosecution because they didn’t want to describe China as an ‘enemy’ is comical.

Though with the current government I wouldn’t put anything past them.
