His last sustained political action, the Tribunal on American War Crimes in Vietnam, was met by a conspiracy of silence round the world. The fact that he was an intellectual genius made it easier for those who purveyed a more comfortable view of life to present him as a simpleton. He endured this too. He continued in the belief that, the desire for power aside, the most socially dangerous conditions of mind were boredom and the love of excitement.

Go on, Mr Trump. We‘re listening.
02.08.2025 06:46 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Once upon a time, two science journalists had an idea for a blog about retractions. And on Aug. 3, 2010, Retraction Watch launched.
And now, 15 years and 6,700 posts later, that work seems more important than ever.
Happy 15th anniversary, Retraction Watch.

"Conference organizers, potential participants fault US policies for falling attendance. Uncertainty about funding and visas takes a toll on networking."
I chose not to attend a major conference in the USA this summer, partially because of the state of things there right now.

My conclusion (and I may miss s/th): for best public service, the give and the take best occur independently of each other. This applies even to small donations. We should allow donations of any size only with a stringent system that makes them anonymous, and should be alarmed by big ones.
n/n
The „take“ is important, too. Politicians need input from experts, from companies, and even from interested parties. Yet, they can get this input without €€ flows, always and everywhere.
Political parties are extremely valuable and tax-funding their expenses is well justified.
4/n
Agreed, the „give“ is important. Wealthy people should be encouraged to help public causes (and the semi-wealthy, too). Yet, they can do it via foundations and NGOs with a known mission, or via a vast set of other institutions, instead of paying a political party.
3/n
It’s give and take. Donations create loyalty and influence the politicians‘ actions. The hypothesis that practically no-one is immune to such reciprocal preferences is consistent with research and with observing current politicians.
2/n
Perhaps a naive question, but honestly curious: Should we continue to allow private citizens and companies to non-anonymously donate €€ to political parties?

In Germany, we all agree that our bureaucracy & regulation are out of proportion.
Or so they say.
👇 THIS is why we have so much bureaucracy: public servants who are willing to accept money from interested parties.
Stop it - and we can cut rules, too.

PhD plagiarists are strongly wasteful for society, and strongly deceitful.
Mainly at fault: their doctoral advisors. It is their job to teach, to train, and to control quality.
PhD granting institutions need to have structures in place to detect it when advisors fail.

To all university colleagues: to be competitive, we need to improve. Ask yourself whether such a case would be possible at your institution, and if so, change it.

„For decades, earning a Ph.D. in economics has been a nearly foolproof path to a lucrative career.“
Ironically, the reason is that the great majority of people on the path don‘t pursue it for the lucrativity.
Anyway, the news from the US is bad. 👇
