‘Self-termination is most likely’: the history and future of societal collapse An epic analysis of 5,000 years of civilisation argues that a global collapse is coming unless inequality is vanquished

“Collapse isn’t just caused by structures, but also people. If you want to save the world then the first step is to stop destroying it."
CSER research affiliate Luke Kemp spoke to @theguardian.com about this new book 'Goliath’s Curse', and the history & future of societal collapse.

This is what the Prompt tries to recover. The AI seeking context.

Asking to borrow human perspective, emotion, meaning/seeking. This is why AI is not sentient. It lacks what all humans possess.

DuckDuckGo has introduced a new feature allowing users to filter out AI-generated images from search results, addressing growing concerns over synthetic content overwhelming authentic visuals online.
The filter can be activated through a dropdown in the Images tab, search settings, or by using a dedicated AI-free domain: noai.duckduckgo.com. The system relies on curated blocklists, including uBlockOrigin’s Huge AI Blocklist, to detect and suppress AI-generated imagery.
While not perfect, it significantly reduces synthetic content visibility. This move sets DuckDuckGo apart from competitors like Google and Bing by giving users direct control over their exposure to AI-generated material.

❤️ What topic should I ask about for my next column? I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Utterly bizarre ‘real emo’ manifesto that I’ve just seen posted to a bin on Christ’s Pieces (funnily enough the long time favoured hang out spot for Cambridge emo/punk kids) in Cambridge. Not a fan of the music, personally, but v.much admire the passion! #cambridgeemomanifesto

The recent court documents showed that Google's internal testing demonstrated that significantly worse search results would not harm their business operations. This apparent immunity to quality concerns stems from the company's dominant market position, which the recent federal court ruling addressed.

"Since Google doesn't have any real competition, it can make the best information hard to find, forcing users to stay on Google for longer and interact with more ads," Papadimitriou said. "This is dangerous for consumers, most of whom think the best results appear first."

The strategy appears to be working from a business perspective. The study suggests that poor organic search results actually benefit Google's bottom line in two ways: they make paid advertisements more valuable to users seeking accurate information, and they force users to refine their searches multiple times, exposing them to more advertising in the process.

For everyone who was like “Google search is getting worse,” we were absolutely right.

Black and white etching-style triptych showing 8 hours for work on the left, 8 hours for rest in the middle, and 8 hours for “what we will” on the right

Did you know the “weekend” and working only 8 hours per day used to be considered a radical, liberal idea?

139 years ago today, in Bay View, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 7 workers (including a 13 yo) lost their lives to advance this revolutionary idea.
