After 3 years of trying to get into a program, I can finally say that I'll be starting a PhD at @forestry.ubc.ca this September! It'll be hard to leave the Arctic behind (although I'll always stay connected in some way), but I'm so excited to be working within my home province of BC.

Here for the next few weeks as an #Ambassador for @polarbearsinternational, teaching guests about polar bears, sea ice loss, and what we can do about it.

It’s my favourite time of year - the wildflowers are starting to bloom in the South #Okanagan. I saw tons of western springbeauty (Claytonia lanceolata) and western buttercups (Ranunculus occidentalis) on a recent hike.

Hundreds in US climate agency NOAA fired in latest cuts Around 880 workers - including weather forecasters - are reported to have lost their jobs.

Distressing news from the US today: 880 NOAA staff fired. From a polar bear perspective, NOAA data is used extensively in analyses. Impacts of losing this expertise is hard to fathom. Short-sighted & a mistake.

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to decadal averages from the 1980s to the 2010s. The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with purple for the 1980s, blue for the 1990s, green for the 2000s, and white for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2000 to 2024. 2025 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between January and April by looking at the decadal average line positions.
