For sure. It builds on the old trope of “they are coming for our jobs” and deep roots of racism. The propaganda provides a nudge, a confirmation of beliefs and builds on fears of the other.

The propaganda that they have been feed worked. They really believe the U.S. is being invaded by thousands of criminals released from jails in other countries. Gangs are pouring through open borders. Despite that many immigrants are their neighbors, peacefully contributing to their communities.

Also some taxpayers believe their tax dollars pay for it all. Collectively yes, not individually. They come into my work—a library—and think that the $38 from their property taxes pays for endless printing, databases (those aren’t cheap), keeping the lights on and our labor. The disconnect is wild.

Brings back not so fond memories of the Bush administration declaring that they were an empire and thus will define and redefine reality as they please. 🙃

Reminds me of when I was lamenting about the lack of green spaces in Chicago, my friend that grew up there promptly told me that I just need to get a second home in Michigan. Blank stares back at her as I thought about how I was scrambling to pay rent that month.
