This is a great opportunity for anyone who needs to do research in Istanbul (or Tรผrkiye generally), or for anyone who needs time and support to finish a dissertation, get started on that book project, etc.

The pace at which we are producing technologies that were *literally* the subject of a Black Mirror episode is astounding.

You can "bake" potatoes in the microwave (I have only done it with sweet potatoes, but I am sure it would work for other kinds too) and can hard boil eggs in an electric kettle if you have access to one. I also make basic salads or eat a lot of tuna/hummus with crackers when away from a kitchen.

Is it just me, or is Interfolio suddenly very glitchy? I don't remember having much trouble with it in previous years, but this year I have had a lot of trouble getting it to successfully upload my documents.

They are forcing the privatization of industriesโ€”including the space industryโ€”by illegally decimating governmental capacity that has been built up over the last century, and which will be too expensive to replace once it is gone.

And one structural thing: moving from known information to new information improves clarity and helps the reader follow your logic. This can be applied at the sentence level, the paragraph level, etc. I started doing this more consciously after I taught writing and it helps me.

If I am struggling with a draft, I sometimes find it helpful to restart with a blank document. It makes it easier to get rid of what is not working and copy over what is. And, important to remember...the time spent writing the first draft is not wasted time!

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.

I have added the RSS feeds for the pages I am interested in to my central RSS reader to make it easier to follow multiple. It can be a little annoying because I get updates every time someone changes "Applied x1" to "Applied x2," but I prefer that to checking the pages every day, haha.

There is this Academic Jobs Wiki that centralizes links to a bunch of discipline-specific wikis that might be useful: academicjobs.fandom.com/wiki/Academi... Some disciplines are not represented (e.g., the Classics wiki is behind a paywall) and there will be some overlap, but it is pretty useful.

I think that having a website is useful if you are contingent/on the market and either work at multiple universities or expect to change universities frequently. It also offers more flexibility than other options; e.g., I have a password protected page for my teaching portfolio.

I think in part the higher education funding crisis and the LLM-teaching crisis actually strike at the same problem, which is that education doesn't work without a broad, society-wide sense that the *actual content* of education - not the credential - is valuable.
