Five years ago Freida and I (and daddy) were watching soccer, then I got up to go to the bathroom and she stole my chair.

When I was a teen, my mom gave me the gift of making her the "bad guy" if I ever didn't want to go somewhere or with someone, but didn't want to tell them why - whether it was that I didn't feel like it or I didn't trust them or whatever. She said to tell them she had said no. It was very helpful.

That's always the second half of the work in that agreement, and often the harder part - when they do come to us with something more dire, we have to just go get them and not freak out or get mad.

That's so adorable. When my brother was about that age, he mashed up midnight snack and bedtime snack into bednight snack, which we still use in our family 50 years later.

My own favourite is my anxiety-motivated process of planning for worst case scenarios, which I refer to as awfulizing.
