Vaughan Williams was an English composer influenced by English folk song and Tudor music.
This couldn't be more obvious than in 'Fantasia on Greensleeves' where he used the well-known C16th folk song.
We’ll be performing this on 22 Nov at A Little English Concert.

Holst’s 'First Suite in E♭ for Military Band' was written in 1911. It was the first piece to convince other composers that serious music could be composed for bands.
Gordon Jacob later transcribed it for full orchestra. SBMS will be performing this on 22 Nov.

Which was your favourite piece of music that we performed in our 2024-25 season?
We’d love to know! Was it 4 Scottish Dances, Beethoven’s Symphony No.7, or maybe Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2? Perhaps the Egmont Overture, or even Haydn’s “London” Symphony?
