Scientific Educations Among U.S. Judges
Should more judges have technical and scientific educations than is currently prevalent in the federal judiciary? This empirical study of the educational backgr
My paper, Scientific Educations Among U.S. Judges, is finally published after years of data collection on the educational background of federal judges.
I conclude that STEM majors are too much of a minority in the federal judiciary.

What AI is doing to America's democracy | LSE Event
YouTube video by LSE
I'm enjoying this talk by @lessig.bsky.social re how AI will impact the world and politics. Prof. Lessig builds on work by David Runciman that corporations are analog AIs showing that nonhuman actors can overtake human goals. Directives of AI can shape the world.

I'm generally not very vocal on politics, but I feel strongly (1) those who favor limited government must enforce limitations of the power of the President even when politically inconvenient; (2) only Congress makes law, which the President should enforce; (3) Presidents should not take emoluments.

Judgment Fund - FAQs
All the lawsuits this administration is creating are unfortunately going to be paid out not by the administration but by the American public--damages awards against the government come from an unlimited appropriation from Treasury. www.fiscal.treasury.gov/judgment-fun...

My latest research looks at STEM education among judges. A side finding was that STEM educated judges are more diverse / more diverse judges more often have that plus factor to their training and experience before they land in their roles.

Right. The military was a place where highly skilled people could be taken seriously without as many biases against minorities as can exist in the private sector. Private sector started catching the research that diverse teams improve problem solving & outcomes--some findings from military data.

I mentioned on another's post, but don't mess with Canadians. Canadians have a reputation for going straight to brutality in conflict. @ryankellycomedy.bsky.social knows.

If history is any indication, countries should not start disputes with Canadians--they have a reputation for unforgivingly cunning brutality (see WWI ham grenades).๐ ๐จ๐ฆ

Thanks for highlighting. As someone who has to deal with awful enough Schedule II requirements to help my family with care (eg can't pick up meds two days early, multiple dr. visits, need new auth every month), we need fewer not more barriers to access these necessary medicines.

(And totally understand if this is a horrible way to pick your brain, but I figured others would love to follow your systems.) For me, I think in systems and processes so having a method that works to emulate is such a godsend.

I ask bc I'd love to improve my approach and impact. I often get an idea & don't convert it quickly enough to a format that I consider likely to be acceptable by law reviews, especially increasing length & background to match article length & citing each line. Multiple times missed the zeitgeist.

I really want to learn your personal system for writing. Do you have a database of notes for citations? Do you write your ideas first roughly then add the citations? With papers in draft form often starting short-ish, does that shift submission strategy or do you submit papers like this to all LR?

@marklemley.bsky.social "One of the challenges that a lot of people have is they don't feel that they can speak up, because it's going to cost them personally. So I think it's all the more important for people who can bear that cost to do so." Love this quote.

Those without pubic research experience don't understand that when you pause research, it often can't just pick back up at another time. Some studies happen over an extended period of time and need ongoing uninterrupted data collection. If a 20 year project pauses, we can lose that insight.

If we expect to compete internationally on innovation, which I understood to be a priority, we can't do that with a flailing patent office.
