Old chemistry/geology teacher, mainly reposting pictures of minerals, trilobites and standing stones. Do like a nice tree as well.

Secondary and FE science teachers are invited to complete a short, anonymous survey exploring how research evidence is used in practice and what support would be useful.

Your responses will help shape a new toolkit and CPD resources.

Take the survey ๐Ÿ”— https://ow.ly/IzZn50Y5oGf

I find it wild that if youโ€™re verbally abusive to a police officer or a nurse you can be prosecuted, but we are saying that when it happens to teachers itโ€™s not even appropriate to send a child home.

The root of hag come from the German hagzussa and Old English hรฆgtesse โ€“ hedge-sitter. For those old boundaries of the land, whether tangled threshold of hawthorn or stacked stone, were magical thresholds. Sitting atop them, the witch could see beyond into the Otherworld. โ€“ย #EmilyCBanting, 1981

Right now there are three aluminium Lego figures orbiting around Jupiter aboard the Juno spacecraft.

They represent the goddess Juno, the god Jupiter and the astronomer Galileo.

Unlike ordinary LEGO figures, they have no movable parts.

My photo shows a small horse statuette in a museum display case. The horse, viewed in profile, was masterfully carved from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago. The sculptor has depicted many realistic details such as the eyes, nostrils, and ears flattened against the head. The coat is represented by finely incised lines and dots. The mane is sculpted in relief, with incised lines on both sides. The four legs and tail are incomplete. The surface of the ivory has a shiny brown patina. Dimensions: Length 7.3 cm x Height 3.5 cm.

The statuette is known as โ€˜The Little Horse of Lourdesโ€™. It was discovered in 1886 in a rock fissure in the Espรฉlugues cave, Lourdes, Haute-Pyrรฉnรฉes, France. Part of the collections at the Musรฉe d'Archรฉologie Nationale, Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

In county folklore, the Queen of Owls reigns from dusk to dawn. In each of her feathers, a map of wisdom. On each of her talons, three drops of blood to cure or curse. Her carved avatars are everywhere. Each one providing her with intelligence. From pew to pub, she peers upon us all. โ€“ Dr. M.Benn

Good morning.

A regular reminder: a tiny few hoard staggering wealth and own much of the media, while millions struggle to survive.

Thatโ€™s not an accident. Itโ€™s a choice made by those in power.

Tax wealth. Fund public services. Build an economy for everyone - not the 1%.

My photo shows a bronze Buddha statuette sitting on a double lotus flower against a grey background in a glass display case. The bronze is now light green in colour, but would originally have appeared like burnished gold. The Buddha is sitting cross-legged with feet upturned. His right hand rests against his knee and his left arm is raised holding his monastic robe. A raised dot on the forehead represents Buddhaโ€™s third eye. His expression is serene, with smiling lips, and eyes gazing ahead. His facial features were highlighted with silver, tin, and black niello. There is glass residue in the eyes and the raised dot on the forehead was highlighted with a layer of gold. Height 8.4 cm, width 6.4 cm.

It was probably made in the Swat Valley (present-day Pakistan) in the late 500s-mid 600s. It was excavated from Viking-age settlement buildings dated AD 800. It isnโ€™t known how it arrived at its final destination but this exotic object travelled far, hinting at far-flung trade routes.

I saw the Helgรถ Buddha on display at the British Museumโ€™s โ€˜Silk Roadsโ€™ exhibition in October 2024, on loan from Historiska Museet, Stockholm.

A small and exotic Buddha found far from home in #VikingAge buildings on the Swedish lake island of Helgรถ.

Probably made in the Swat Valley, the Buddha travelled some 5,000 km from its place of origin, encapsulating the idea of long-distance trade during the Viking Age.

Quite bored with โ€œbut ID cards work elsewhere, why not the UK?โ€ Different countries have different political & legal cultures. In 2017, I supported a paper that described trilobite eggs in the cheeks. Horseshoe crabs also store eggs this way until they are fertilized.

I helped with the SEM images.
