So true. A great deal can be "said" with gestures or merely a shared glance. I estimate erectus was the first speaker of words, but their hyoid bone is intermediate between australopithicus and us, so they couldn't form all the vowel sounds. Probably single words that sounded like humming + gesture.

Yeah, I'm not a Chomsky fan (more of a Wittgenstein guy), but I see what you mean as far as an inborn capacity. Tomasello uses our inborn drive to "share our psychological states with others" in much the same way when discussing mothers establishing a joint frame of reference with an infant.

Fascinating stuff. I particularly enjoyed the comparison of language evolution and how modern children acquire language. Probably because I think the same! Haha
