To find out what marine science will look like in 2035, I covered the @nationalacademies.org Forecasting the Ocean report for my final Smithsonian Ocean Portal story. Thank you to my sources and to reviewer @nancyknowlton.bsky.social for lending their expertise!

Why to Consider Keeping Bees Come Spring
The humble honeybee may just be a humanβs new best friend. With the spring season approaching, soon bringing a growth spurt in flowering plants, the optimal time to begin beekeeping is upon us. If you...
Environmental news as of late has been...quite gloomy to say the least. So, I wrote about beekeeping for @scenichudson.bsky.social.

New York Climate Superfund Becomes Law - Inside Climate News
The stateβs legislation is the second in a growing coalition of Northeast states requiring polluters pay for climate damages. Big Oil is already fighting back.
A quick glimpse at the news shows us just some of the scale of damage caused by the fossil fuel industry. While the human cost is often irreparable, superfund laws can help cover some of the financial cost. We need to pass them everywhere!

Orca who carried dead calf's body for weeks has lost another offspring
The calf was born in late December. Observing researchers noted unusual unspecified behaviors by mother and calf that led them to worry for the young whaleβs health.
A tough start to the year for the Southern Resident orcas and this mother and calf.
We need to do more to protect these amazing marine mammals and the wild salmon they feed on, as the @centerforbiodiv.bsky.social's Brady Bradshaw says here.
