I have cancelled our subscription to the Washington Post. It's not about editorial policy; it's about the cuts to reporting staff - including firing the on-the-ground reporter in Ukraine while she is working with a pen frozen from the cold because of Russian bombardment.

It makes WONDERFUL toast! :-)
...the cast iron does amazing things to the crust. Far better than my old open top Pyrex.

I suggest keeping much of those in a deep freeze, until needed. In vacuum sealed bags.

Emperor Caligula mocked Rome by pretending to be a god and nominating his horse for office; Trump does the modern version, issuing pronouncements elevating the Army Navy game while doubling down in Minnesota.
History is echoing.

Given the choice between Newsom and outright fascists I do not have any problem at all.

I have my great grandmother's table in my kitchen. For reals. It is made of solid oak.
It was in my mother's kitchen, during the 1950s. There was a larger modern table, in the dining room.
...I get it that this is unusual.

I have run my own email server since the late 1980s, shortly after it became possible for an individual (not a university or corporation) to own a domain.

For reasons.

β€œPurpose” is one of those Sapir-Whorf teleological terms that limit the capability space of thought - emergent behavior of systems is entirely left out.
…it’s much harder to reason about systems behavior than is commonly realized.

Animism, hmmm? Perhaps a dose of Shinto is called for. Just regard all the microprocessor edge devices surrounding you as Japanese Kami. Especially Onryō.

There curious rhetorical failure in general discourse as I see it is the failure to observe that we already are geoengineering the planet; that is precisely what global warming *is* a consequence of.

It is in our home, Nova Lux. We make a venison stew, with juniper berries gathered wild here in the New Mexico high desert, along with black plums and Boudreaux wine.
Very rich and tasty.

This is lovely. The emergent behavior of trig functions for modulus arithmetic is a nice surprise. Unexplained is how the sudden grokking arises; this is due to Stochastic Gradient Descent in a higher dimensional space. I'd like to see this with Hessian spectra.

First they came for the font. Then they came for the kerning. Next they came for the ligatures. Finally, they came for the British spelling.

Redirecting...

An extended follow-up to my snarky remark on Chomsky: www.facebook.com/share/p/1AW6...

I have never understood why people think Chomsky's comments on politics are reasonable BECAUSE he is the author of a (discredited) linguistic theory.

I've seen M31 - back in the 1970s when I had young eyes. I never succeeded with M33. The latter is the farthest object visible unaided; but requires absolute dark skies and complete dark adaptation - and is only visible 10 degree off axis from foveal vision. Andromeda is possible in Big Sky country.

The abolishment of kerning is next - it "adjusts" between letters, depending on such things as "optical density", and is a clear contraction of White Space.

Your remark makes me think of the Monty Hall problem - and how difficult people find it to be "rational" in that particular case.
