22.02.2026 15:40 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This is the pontoon where one used to board the ferry at Eastney, Portsmouth, to cross the fast-flowing waters to Hayling Island. I sat on the beach in 1994 to paint this and I remember a goat was tethered nearby. It's unlikely that we will visit Portsmouth again but this was particularly memorable because the coxswain of the boat was my uncle Bobby Baker, one of my father's brothers. He was a lovely, good-humoured man, ex-naval. We had a chat with him but I think that was on an earlier occasion when we bought tickets and went over to the island.
My watercolour from 1994 painted sitting on Eastney beach, Portsmouth. I love the memory that it captures. This pontoon is where one boarded the little ferry that my uncle Bobby skilfully guided across to Hayling Island through the fast flowing water. See alt text.

"What remote work did reveal were inefficiencies that long predated the pandemic: paper-based approvals, unnecessary in-person meetings & workflows built around physical proximity rather than outcomes. Remote work forced long-delayed modernization."
I think of those working remotely in bad weather.
If youโre like most drivers, public transit is for other people.
But hereโs the thing: investing in better buses and trains could make your commute faster and less stressful, without you ever setting foot on one.

21.02.2026 21:45 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I just realized as I was looking for furniture, you know what's super expensive? Office furniture. It's not just the real estate but the desks, pods, monitor arms, chairs, etc. all cost ridiculous amounts of money. Remote work done smartly could cut these expenses in half at least.
21.02.2026 16:04 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I can't really blame her. The fact that CP told her she was supposed to make sure they scanned her items when she dropped them off-make sure they did their job correctly-is laughable. This is why they denied her insurance claim she stated. A clown show of customer "service".
21.02.2026 12:27 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It will tank for sure. Wouldn't it be nice if workers were actually interviewed about what they do and how they work from home versus office? Much insight would be gained from that and they would discover just how many people start early and stay later at home. This will be a loss for everyone.

21.02.2026 01:27 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Well, we assume it's a power move but we don't know. It could just as easily be a way to get people to quit without having to lay them off. Either way, it's no more a justification than using public workers to prop up businesses. So many workers volunteer labour at home. That will happen no longer.
20.02.2026 18:22 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Someone should do cost analysis of 4 things: Compare the cost before COVID measures, with COVID, with hybrid after bringing people back, with non-union forced back full-time. See the electricity, water, paper towels, etc. expenses from all 4 and how they compare adjusting for inflation.
20.02.2026 15:05 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The weird thing is, bringing workers back to offices full-time actually costs MORE money. So that move makes no sense, if you have to make cuts because you have no money.

Also, the need for mail and in-person services is on the decline everywhere thanks to the internet and increased digital platforms.
