to solve a problem, it’s good to first look at: who has been trying to solve this problem the longest? and what do they find does not work? Is the reason the problem has not been solved bc it’s complex/expensive to build? It is rarely because those involved are not ‘positive’ or smart enough

Of course, there’s still the huge caveat that these tools are cannibalizing the sources of knowledge they depend on. The more people use GenAI instead of asking questions on forums, Reddit, or similar, the less AI can train on those conversations in order to give even broadly useful answers.

This is the best use I’ve found for LLMs to date. It makes it easier to ask broad questions in order to narrow down a more specific search, which is best done somewhere else.

But the tools encourage you to get specific, so it requires some diligence to keep the topic broad enough to be useful.

This is true and also I think importantly true.

We tend to end up with a pretty good mix of classic favorites, movies that neither of us has seen, and “here’s something I love that may or may not be to your taste”. We both have lists of movies we want to bring when we can find a good connection to them.

Oh, interesting! That’s a good strategy for doing a sort of ad hoc double feature. I find that there’s fun in keeping the movie a surprise, so we’ll spend the week coming up with a pick but not reveal it until we sit down to watch together.

Lesley and I play a game we call Ping Pong Cinema. Approximately weekly, we have a movie date night where we alternate who picks the movie, but your pick has to relate back somehow to the last movie - maybe they have an actor in common, or a shared location, or a theme or scene that connects them.

Completely forgot about VAST and La Oreja De Van Gogh, two lesser-known bands that I enjoyed when I was in high school. Bought a couple used CDs so that I can listen to them again at some point when I’m looking for a high intensity nostalgia trip.

It’s a little shocking to think that this was contemporaneous with Finding Nemo. What a turbulent time in animated filmmaking.

Anyway, it’s a cult classic and I’m glad I’ve finally seen it.

I thought the robot B.E.N. was doing an anachronistic Josh Gad. Lesley thought he was doing a Robin Williams. Turns out it was Martin Short doing a Martin Short.

There’s a montage in the middle of the movie set to the Goo Goo Dolls which felt extremely turn-of-the-millennium. It made me think of Don Bluth’s Anastasia from a few years earlier.

Silver is made into a more sympathetic character, which I think gives it some heart. And I genuinely liked how the romance evolved between Doppler and the captain.

The animation was really impressive. I read that the directors wanted to move the camera around like Spielberg or Cameron, which comes across. Neat mix of traditional 2D and CG 3D animation styles. Made me think of a technological iteration on the ballroom scene from Beauty and the Beast.

Just watched Treasure Planet (2002) for Ping Pong Cinema. This week was my pick, connecting to last week’s movie (Mickey 17) via the theme of space travel. First time I’d ever seen it. (Also pretty much all of my knowledge of Treasure Island comes from the Muppets.) Pretty good! 3 out of 4 stars.

I have a very similar perspective to yours. The people in my life who are fans (on a scale from “casual fan” to “moderate fan”) are also geeky folks, but notably not games folks. Maybe it has especially poor penetration into gamesy spaces?

I didn’t see enough people talk about Echoes of Wisdom, by the way. It’s not perfect, and it’s a much smaller package, but it’s genuinely interesting both as a systems-based puzzle game (like TOTK) and as an entry in the Zelda franchise. I had a good time with it.

Looking at Tears of the Kingdom, Echoes of Wisdom, and Bananza and seeing a trend of Nintendo introducing heavily systemic gameplay into different genres, with enough production support to make them really polished experiences. It’s been very exciting to see (and fun to play!).

I think the single most important aspect of a game's art style & aesthetic choices, superseding all other concerns, is that the game should be uniquely identifiable at a glance. You need to be able to see a screenshot or a gif and be like "oh its that game" instantly. It needs its own identity.
