There should be one episode of Star Trek next generation where out of nowhere a big happy dog runs down the corridor and a yellow shirt we’ve never seen before comes chasing after it saying β€œshit shit shit shit shit!” and then the episode resumes as normal

My year in books # 39: I’ve just been reading a lot of Osamu Dazai, ok? And yeah I read No Longer Human but I really want to recommend this small collection. β€œ100 Views of Mt. Fuji” alone is worth the price of admission and you might get addicted, too.

Like Smoke, Like Light: Stories Stories

My year In books # 38: Solidly delightful collection of speculative short stories. Have not read such an impressive debut in maybe ever & I can’t wait for more from this author. Japanese folklore & explorations of cultural difference & societal Inequality through a sci-fi but also some horror lens.

My year in books # 30: A painful but uplifting exploration of the many forms resistance has taken during the darkest years of history. Very, very relevant of course now. If you think you’re not strong or β€œrevolutionary” enough to be a meaningful part of a resistance movement, READ THIS.

My year in books # 37: The toxic racist, sexist, and classist workplace behaviors on show here pervade our capitalist system as a whole. It’s not okay anywhere and we need to model and push change. Creative professions can be joyful and collaborative, not exploitative!!!

Been slacking again; oh well. Picking up in no real order.

My year in books # 44: Can’t recommend this book highly enough. It hits where so many of our current injustices intersect. Eugenics, medicalized racism & sexism, white christo-fascism & nationalism. Educate yourself & FIGHT.

My year in books #22:

Been slacking with these and all posts but more old alt-manga exploration with Kuniko Tsurita’s β€œThe Sky Is Blue With a Single Cloud”. I checked it out from the library but I’ll buy my own copy. Beautiful & Tsurita was a trailblazing badass.

Next album up: Bewilderment by Pale Jay. I’m a sucker for retro stuff, this album is even a 45 and I didn’t notice so I was super confused when I put it on the wrong speed at first. πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜… #PaleJay

I’ve decided to play a bunch of my vinyls today to distract from the horrors so I can work. First album up, Filthy Underneath by Nadine Shah. I’ve been completely obsessed with her voice for a while and this whole album is a banger. I hope I can see her live someday. #NadineShah

Then puts his hands on his head, then pulls his own head off.

NGL fun, if problematic. If like me you are accustomed to a certain kind of fictional wonder voyage with admittedly sometimes-objectionable exoticism then you’ll enjoy it. Made me want more of the author’s work; seemed quite a character but there’s little else in translation.

More Tanizaki and also excellent. Less fantastical subjects than Siren’s Lament but still beautiful and evocative writing with vivid characters. Somehow exactly the vibe my brain needs lately.

The Siren’s Lament: Essential Stories Essential Stories

I didn’t know what to do on Twitter and I don’t know what to do on Bluesky but eh. Books? I’ve been sharing My Year In Books elsewhere so I guess I can here too.

#11 I first read Jun'ichirō Tanizaki’s famous essay β€œIn Praise of Shadows” and it made me seek out his other work. Enthralling.
