Made me think more on my thoughts re: women/girls in Maytime/Midsummer civic perf. in London & elsewhere (of course in the footsteps of Tracey Hill’s incredible work) — can’t wait to incorporate Lydia’s work on race-making/English identity formation in anything I write in the future on this topic!

I’m so interested in the legacy of London’s “Evil May Day” and its impact on festive perf. culture in the city, and this talk revealed some really interesting connections to the Lord Mayor’s Show/its representations of racial identities and the cultural memory of London’s anti-“stranger” rhetoric

Took a very worthwhile break from viva prep today to hear the brilliant Lydia speak about race-making in early modern civic performance today, something I’ve thought so much about in terms of my own festive perf. culture work but haven’t had the time to write much about! So many thoughts!
